The director of Secret Invasion, Ali Selim, has confirmed that a prominent MCU character will not make a cameo appearance in the Disney+ series amid speculations suggesting otherwise.
Secret Invasion tells the story of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury as he tries to thwart the infiltration of Earth by the shape shifting Skrulls. The series boasts a diverse cast of returning and new MCU actors, but one central character rumored to join Fury will unfortunately not feature in the series.
In an interview with SFX Magazine (via The Direct), director Ali Selim mentioned that Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine would not feature in Secret Invasion.
In fact, Ali seemed pretty confused about how such a rumor originated. “I’m not sure how that ended up there!” the director proclaimed. Selim also shared his two cents on cameos. According to him, the show will have enough surprises in terms of the plot, but he feels cameos are “less interesting.” Read his entire statement below:
Those things on the internet are quite funny. [Contessa Valentina actress] Julia Louis-Dreyfus is not in the show… I’m not sure how that ended up there! It’s all about surprise, intention and reveal, and repeat. I hope there’s a lot of that in there. But in terms of cameos, that’s less interesting to me than the heart of the story, which I think we really found, and the heart of that story is: ‘Who can you trust?’
It is a known fact now that the series will not include any significant cameos from the MCU, considering it will not feature any Avengers. The only exception will be Don Cheadle’s Rhodey, as the story centers on Nick Fury’s solo struggle against the Skrulls.
The deal here is that Secret Invasion cannot maintain the same scale of the story it is inspired by due to its format. For context, it is an adaptation of a significant event from the Marvel comics.
The show is also running on several restrictions put forward by Disney+ due to budget constraints. This makes it even more difficult for major stars to appear on the show.
However, this is not something to be too worried about, given that the show is quite interesting. Cameos by The Avengers would make it more popular, but it will not lose out heavily.
As per the show, Fury’s negligence in assisting the Skrulls drove Gravik to seek revenge, so it is only fair that Jackson’s character is the one to resolve his problem.
While a cameo by Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel would have been logical due to her relation to the conflict, Fury’s upcoming appearance in The Marvels could clarify why Captain Marvel could not help him during Secret Invasion.
