Donald Glover’s Atlanta will soon be moving to Europe to produce seasons 3 & 4. FX’s critically acclaimed series follows a rapper called Paper Boi and his cousin-cum-manager Earnest Marks’ journey to rise at the top of the hip-hop scene in the city of Atlanta. The show has garnered many awards and nominations, bagging two Golden Globe Awards and two Primetime Emmy Awards.
Glover, who plays Marks, also serves as the writer/director of the show. He is joined by an ensemble cast including Brian Tyree Henry as Paper, Lakeith Stanfield as Darius, Paper’s right-hand man, and Zazie Beetz, who plays Vanessa, Earn’s on-and-off girlfriend and the mother of his daughter.
Atlanta‘s season 2 finale premiered in May 2018. Now, according to Deadline, the show is moving to Europe to shoot the upcoming seasons. Delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Atlanta will resume production in London, move on to the Strait of Dover to reach Amsterdam, and end filming in Paris.
The crew and cast will be travelling to location on March 23 and shooting has been expected to start from April 5.
FX Chief John Landgraf stated last summer that one season of the show will shoot completely in Europe while the other will travel back to Atlanta. Season 3, which was supposed to premiere in January of 2021, had to be pushed back due to the coronavirus outbreak.
However, the delay might have provided Glover and his writing staff with enough time to wrap up the scripts for the upcoming seasons. From Landgraf’s earlier statement, the two seasons are to be shot together back-to-back. This is why the COVID travel restrictions “pushed back the timing a little bit.”
Many have even opined that the steady schedule could bring much flair to the show’s sterile quality. This was backed by Glover’s tweet from last November, which stated that seasons 3 & 4 would be so good “only The Sopranos can touch us.”
Irrespective of his boastful claims, The Sopranos is widely regarded as one of the greatest TV shows of all time, which quite possibly could make Glover’s remarks true.
As one of Hollywood’s famed triple-threat stars, Glover owns the talents to back his word. With the show’s shooting resuming shortly in the European scenery, Atlanta’s two new seasons are bound to be outstanding, perhaps even better than their predecessors.
