Centered around the obnoxiously ambitious Californian teen Payton (Ben Platt), who was sure he wanted to be the US President since he was seven. The debut season had everything from sex, melodrama, plot twists and a bunch of teenagers too mature for own their good.

What can we expect from season 2?

For the second edition, things will pick up right where they left off in season 1. Now a college student, Payton is ready to fight and unseat Senate Majority Leader and ready for incumbency Dede Standish (Judith Light) in the New York State Senate race.

Meanwhile, his way to the top will see an unexpected hurdle in his mother, Georgina Hobart (Gwyneth Paltrow). She will make a major decision that could undo everything he’s hoping to achieve.

We will also see Payton trying to rise above petty politics and succeed without compromising his character. He will need to find his voice so he can inspire and excite voters with his political message.

“The show…has jumped forward a few years, so we’re all playing a lot closer to our ages,” Ben Platt told Deadline. “As someone who’s continually back in high school, it’s a very nice change of pace. It’s a bit more adult, I think, in tone, and there’s a bit more of an East Coast shadow over the whole thing I love.”

Indeed, the second season takes place in New York, as opposed to its California-based debut season.

Bulk of cast returns

Ben Platt, Lucy Boynton, Zoey Deutch, Laura Dreyfuss, Theo Germaine, David Corenswet, Bette Midler, Judith Light, Julia Schlaepfer, and most others are set to return for a second go-round.

Season 3 will come, but late

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the show could have as many as five seasons, following Payton, as he runs in various elections, with the last being the race for the presidency.

According to the super-producer Ryan Murphy, who is also the show’s writer and showrunner, told Collider.com, “I think where season 2 ends, what I would love to do is take a couple of years off and have Ben Platt get a little bit older for his final race,”.

“That would be a presidential race, right? That’s always what we had designed, and I think that’s what our plan is,” he continued.

Murphy also feels since Ben is too young, a couple of years’ worth of wait would do well for the creators to figure out how to age him up a little bit. He, however, confirmed, “But that’s always been my plan.”

Season two of The Politician features seven episodes, all completed in time for the coronavirus shutdown. So Murphy’s plans to delay the show a bit before Payton’s Presidential race might cover for the Hollywood shutdown caused by the pandemic.

The Politician comes from Fox21 Studios and is part of Murphy’s deal with its parent, 20th Century Fox TV. The show also features frequent Murphy collaborators Falchuk and Brennan as writers and EPs.
