If you’re a fan of classic monster tales like Frankenstein and Invisible Man, you must know about the Universal Monster movies. You know, the franchise that started with Bela Lugosi’s Dracula in 1931, which currently has several monster film adaptations under its belt, like Wolfman, The Mummy, and more.
After 2020’s Invisible Man and its confirmed sequel, this is the first movie addition that’s officially in development in the franchise. Scream 6 directors Matt Benitelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett have been tapped to make the untitled film, but the main character and plot are being kept under wraps.
But the directorial duo has given us some insight into the upcoming film! In an interview with ComicBook, the two filmmakers confirmed shooting in Dublin is due to start shortly and explained that the film will be a standalone film that adds something new to the ongoing franchise. Read their complete statements below:
We’re out here right now, we’re in Dublin, and we’re hopefully starting to shoot in a few weeks; it’s very fast. It’s a Universal Monster movie, and that, for us, is insane that we’re making a Universal Monster movie.
As the guys who brought you Scream 5 and 6, we are very much fans of original, standalone movies. Kids of the ’80s and ’90s, we miss that. Obviously, that’s not really where the world is right now, especially with studio movies, and that’s fine because there are other ways to do that.
And I think our approach is always, it sounds weird, but that’s our approach on Scream 5 and Scream 6, and that’s our approach on this one. Let’s make this original movie; it’s a standalone movie, there is a monster in it, and that much is for sure. It’s Universal doing their thing, where they’re giving different filmmakers, ‘Here, take this and run with it.’
That, for us, is exciting as filmmakers to be going into making this movie. It’s also really exciting to watch other filmmakers put their stamp on something we know from growing up.
In 2017, Universal Pictures tried to revive the franchise with Tom Cruise’s The Mummy reboot under the Dark Universe. But when that film did colossally unwell at the theaters, all other Dark Universe projects, like Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, were scrapped.
Returning to standalone projects, they released Invisible Man in 2020, and we can all agree that it was a great hit! With the confirmation of its sequel, Universal Pictures also greenlit a Wolfman reboot starring Ryan Gosling, which is still in the works.
After their last trial and error, Universal Pictures is sticking to handing out standalone renewals for Universal Monster films. I don’t know which monster Gillett and Olpin will fixate on, but I’ll keep you posted, so stay tuned to Cine Dope!
