The upcoming installment in the Scream franchise is R-rated, which means by the end of the film, 90% of the characters are expected to die by the good ol’ Ghostface knife.
However, now director Tyler Gillett has teased that some of the new characters could survive the attacks and possibly make it into future films.
In a new interview with Total Film, Gillett talked about the future of the franchise,
This new cast of characters is so wonderful. The legacy cast, they’re so wonderful. I think what we discovered, and what [screenwriters] Guy [Busick] and James [Vanderbilt] did, is they found a real reason for the next story to exist. We know that there is more gas in the tank. There are more stories to be told in Woodsboro, and about these characters, for sure.
Gillett co-directed with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, taking over the film following the passing of Wes Craven in 2015. The upcoming movie will be a sequel to the original franchise and intends to reboot the classic horror franchise for a newer generation of fans.
However, Producer Kevin Williamson assured fans that the film will still have Craven’s imprint on it,
I read the script. I spoke up when I felt like I should, and I kept my mouth shut when I felt I should. Whenever they had a question, I was there. It’s their script. It’s beautiful. It’s the fabric and DNA of SCREAM. I think the filmmakers have the DNA of this franchise in their soul. I think they understand Wes Craven and his filmmaking.
The film takes place 25 years after the events of the Woodsboro murders when a new killer imitating Ghostface emerges to target a group of teenagers who are somehow connected to the original killers.
Total Film also released exclusive stills/images, giving fans the first look at Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott with the original and new cast. (via Hello Sidney)
Campbell describes her character to be more mature than she was in the previous films as she is a mother now and has “another level of strength as a woman.” Whereas Gale Weathers works on a successful morning show now but is still somewhat miserable.
If original characters are to return, how could one forget Dewey Riley, who is now ten years older and still living in Woodsboro. After all, in the trailer, he’s the one who calls Sidney to inform her about the copycat killer.
Alongside Campbell, the cast includes Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.
Scream arrives in theatres on January 14, 2022.
