Trailer Released for Taika Watiti & Michael Fassbender’s Next Goal Wins

Did anybody get a bit of Ted Lasso vibes from Michael Fassbender in the new trailer for Next Goal Wins? Taika Watiti’s latest film after Thor: Love and Thunder seems like the best project for the director after mixed reviews for his last film.

Next Goal Wins is a tale of a team who is on “the greatest losing streak in history” and Watiti makes a fun play on the plot, referencing his losses at award nominations in the trailer. The biographical film, which is based on a true story highlighted in a 2014 documentary of the same name, follows the life of a Dutch American coach called Thomas Rongen.

X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender will play the lead character who is asked to coach the American Samoa team after he was fired. The problem with the team? They have never scored a goal in their career. And want to know Rongen’s goal? To lead the world’s weakest football team into the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Impossible? Quite so.

NEXT GOAL WINS | Official Trailer | Searchlight Pictures

The trailer opens with Coach Rongen getting fired and being left with two options – stay unemployed or coach the American Samoa team.

While drowning his fate in booze, Rongen arrives to turn the catastrophic team’s losing streak around, only to find a rather unachievable task set before him. The team’s spirit is crushed and so is Rongen’s – so will the metaphorical phoenix find its way to life from the ashes of the Samoa team’s burnt-out career?

With Next Goal Wins, Watiti is returning to his previous film-making style. The comedic tone in the trailer manages to retain the classic Taika humor, and hopefully it will deliver a win for the director after the mixed reactions that Thor: Love and Thunder got.
