Schmigadoon! Season 2 Ending: It’s Not Always Tragic!

Schmigadoon! season 2 has wrapped up with six episodes on Apple TV+, resolving some mysteries and creating new ones for the musical comedy show.

The second season is different from the first one, as it spoofs the darker musicals of the 60s and 70s instead of the classic ones.

Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) and Melissa (Cecily Strong) encounter parodies of musicals like Hair, Pippin, Cabaret, Chicago, Sweeney Todd, and more, as they end up in Schmicago.

The same actors play different roles in season 2 to match the era’s darker musicals and signify that the time period is different. The couple face a world where musicals have tragic endings this season, but the finale proves this was not always true.

1. Happy Endings For Everyone!

In episode 4, Josh escapes the death penalty for killing Elsie, thanks to a brilliant song by his attorney Bobbie Flanagan (Jane Krakowski). However, he and Melissa can’t get out of Schmicago.

So, they decide to help the others find their happiness so that they can leave, and they succeed in doing so by the end of this season!

With Kratt gone, the people of Schmicago are happy and free from his evil influence.

Many characters find their love in the Schmigadoon! season 2 finale. Dooley (Alan Cumming) meets his daughter (Dove Cameron) again, Sergeant Rivera (Jaime Camil) becomes a star, and the Narrator (Tituss Burgess) stops narrating.

Josh and Melissa not only go back to their lives happier than before, but they also make everyone else happier.

So, everyone is happy and satiated. This is one of the primary reasons why they can get out of Schimago by the end.

2. Reality is the Real Happy Ending!

Josh and Melissa

Josh and Melissa have the choice to leave or stay in Schmicago in the season 2 finale. The people try to make them stay, the Narrator saying, “It’s gonna be a constant struggle,” but Melissa says, “But isn’t that the whole point?”

They chose “something real” over the fake but magical world of Schmicago.

This is the same choice that Pippin makes at the end of Pippin, picking a normal life over magic and show.

The iconic duo could have stayed in Schmicago, where they have happy endings for sure, but they realize that they want the hardships if they could have something real together. They get a reward for this choice in the real world with a family, finally having a baby.

Their happy ending in Schmigadoon! season 1 was about rediscovering their love for each other and their happy ending in Schmigadoon! season 2 is from picking their life together over the tempting world of Schmicago. How poetic!

3. The Real Essence of Schimigadoon! 2’s Ending

The last song of Schmigadoon! season 2 reveals the true message of the season finale.

The song celebrates happy beginnings, singing, “Happy endings don’t exist, but here’s a pearl you may have missed / every day can be a happy beginning.”

Melissa understands that Schmicago is mocking musicals from the 60s and 70s and says those musicals don’t have happy endings. But that doesn’t stop them from having happy beginnings.

Melissa and Josh’s departure from Schmicago is sad and sweet, but it opens up a new happy beginning for them in New York City.

Life is full of endings, but every full stop also starts a new sentence, and that is the true message of Schmigadoon! season 2’s finale.

It’s good to wish for a happy ending, but the journey to that ending is as valuable as the result. What counts is choosing happiness and living every day as a happy start, where anything is possible.

Schmigadoon! season 2 may be done, but hopefully, it will create the opportunity for a happy start with a season 3.

4. New Beginnings With Season 3?

As for Schmigadoon! season 3, it hasn’t been confirmed yet by Apple TV+, but there are some hints and hopes from the stars and the show’s executive producer.

They suggest that Schmigadoon! season 3 could pay homage to musicals of the 80s and 90s, such as Phantom of the Opera, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Wicked, RENT, and Disney on Broadway.

So, tune in right now and enjoy the musical rollercoaster ride if you haven’t already!
