Scalpers are easily amongst the most hated people in the tech and gaming industry. As the world goes through a chip shortage, these people decided they would turn a profit by charging exorbitant amounts for GPUs and other PC components. But they don’t stop there, as now they are doing the same, but with Elden Ring network test codes.
FromSoftware closed the registrations for the test on November 8th, 2021, announcing that only the selected few would be receiving the codes.
Some scalpers were able to get their hands on some of these codes, and instead of using them to try the game for themselves, they took to eBay to see how much money they could squeeze out of others. Currently, the going rate for the codes averages out at around $200. The listings include both PlayStation and Xbox codes, but nothing for PC as yet.
Elden Ring is amongst one of the most anticipated games of 2022, going head to head with some major titles such as God of War: Ragnarok and Breath of the Wild 2. So, naturally, it became a perfect target for scalpers to use to exploit those fans who desperately want to try the game with their own hands, even if just a demo.
Scalpers have also been widely condemned for hoarding the already scarce Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles, but selling game test codes is low for even their standards.
This news comes hot on the heels of the recent gameplay showcase, which gave fans a new look at the world, combat, and other game mechanics. FromSoftware also announced that players would choose from five different classes when starting their game, much like the beginning procedure of Dark Souls titles.
Test codes that could have gone to an ardent fan of FromSoftware games are now listed on the internet for insane prices, and that is a genuinely worrying state of the market. What else will be acquired just to be flipped for a profit? We doubt the developers will be able to do anything to stop this, but we hope that people don’t feed the scalpers by buying the codes either.
