Golden Globes winner Sandra Oh returns to the big screen with a new supernatural horror movie titled Umma.
On March 1, MovieClips Trailers dropped a thrilling trailer for Umma, featuring Oh as Amanda, a Korean immigrant and a single mother living with a daughter, played by Fivel Stewart, in America.
The trailer starts with Amanda and her daughter living peacefully on their farm, but it soon becomes obvious that their life is far from ordinary—there are no cellphones, no internet, and no cars are allowed past a certain point.
All this, until a man rides past the warning line and delivers Amanda the remains of her mother—informing her that she has passed away and making a guilt-inducing comment on her abandoning her Umma.
The unknown man warns her that her mother’s “anger will grow as long as she remains in this box.” But, Amanda also knows where that comment came from. As she explains to her daughter,
“Some Koreans believe life’s hardships are caused by the tormented spirits of their ancestors”

What ensues are creepy stills and screams as Amanda sees herself changing into her mother—mood swings, anger, the urge to protect, and to not change.

Umma is a Korean word for ‘mother’ and it is the generational mother-daughter relationship with a mix of South Korean tradition that the movie plays on.
Judging by the trailer and the eerie teaser poster showing Oh’s half-face overridden with black smoke and wrinkles, the movie seems to tilt towards a possession horror movie.
The supernatural horror film also marks the debut for Iris K. Shim as both a director and a writer. Meanwhile, Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi have worked on it as producers, drawing in a considerable amount of excitement and expectations with them.
The horror movie, Umma, will be released in theaters on March 18.
