Marvel Studios is the gift that keeps on giving with no intentions to slow down anytime soon.
Next up in Phase 4 is a band of powerful beings called the Eternals, set to make their MCU debut in November this year. These characters, however, aren’t exactly new. In fact, they’re supposed to have been on Earth for seven thousand years.
Helmed by director Chloé Zhao and featuring a stellar cast including Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Kit Harrington, among others, this is a big one for Marvel. And the studio has been ramping up its promotion.
The Eternals featured on Total Film’s covers in their superhero attire and talked about their characters, where Hayek revealed some interesting details about her character, Ajak.
Twitter user @CreamOrScream posted screenshots of the interview where Hayek detailed how her character cannot have children,
Chloé decided to tackle the concept of leadership from the perspective of motherhood… I’m not a mother. I’m an alien. I can’t have kids. However, my character used to be a man in the comics, now it’s a woman. So instead of just changing the gender, I proposed to [Zhao] to really bring something that is very specific to womanhood.

Talking about how her character Ajak will serve this perspective, Hayek added,
I need to guide them into things… we have a mission in life, in the world. A mother also needs to guide her kids. When they misbehave, she will reprimand them, but always from the perspective of motherhood… There’s an empathy to it – although I’m not allowed to have empathy because I’m an alien. So that makes it interesting…

There’s a possibility that maybe the entire race of Eternals can’t bear children (I mean… they’ve been alive for several millennia, they would’ve gotten bored at some point). Or maybe it’s just how the Celestials created all of them.
Whatever it is, the film will hopefully explain this detail. The final trailer had previously explained why the super-powerful alien beings were merely background spectators during the Infinity Saga.
Zhao also talked about how the film fits into the MCU and how it’ll impact its future,
I think we stand alone as a film for sure. But I do think we will have a very big effect on the future of the MCU with what happens in this film. Which, you know, as a fan, is really satisfying for me! I geek out.

The Eternals will come down to the battlefield to fight Deviants this time, but will Thanos be involved in any capacity? After all, he is an Eternal in the comics who was born with the Deviant syndrome.
Guess we’ll have to wait till the film’s release to find out what their whole deal is.
Eternals is set for a theatrical release worldwide on November 5, 2021.
