Milo faints, and Bisco takes him to an abandoned car, overgrown with leaves. When he wakes up, Bisco brings him two live lizards to eat. Bisco plans to go through the Ashio Bonecoal mountains and find a railcar in the mines to go south to Yamagata.

While walking, Bisco shows Milo a crab pincer sticking out from the ground. The giant crab attached to it comes out. His name is Akutagawa, and he hates Milo. He flings Milo off his back every time he tries to ride.

While Milo practices riding Akutagawa, he meets a traveler, the pink-haired girl from before. The pink-haired girl tries to steal Akutagawa, but Bisco sets her straight, and she runs away.

At night, they find shelter in a temple, but the pink-haired girl is already there. As they get closer, they see that the girl is seizing. She vomits up strange things. Milo kisses her and pulls a balloon worm out with his mouth.

The governor’s special forces are fed these worms and given drugs to suppress their growth. As soon as they leave or run away, the worm acts up, and the worker dies.

After the pink-haired girl is better, she sells them food, but since she can’t sell them fuel, she throws her tin of oil away.

This wakes up the gigantic mantis residing in the floor and walls of the temple. Together they subdue it but not before it blows up the Bonecoal mine. Now they have to think of another way to get to Akita.
