RWBY Acquired By VIZ Media, Will Continue Production

The acquisition of the ‘RWBY’ rights by VIZ Media following the closure of Rooster Teeth is a cause for celebration.

‘RWBY’, an American anime-influenced series, was one of the flagship titles of Austin-based production company Rooster Teeth and its accompanying animation studio. The series, created by the late Monty Oum, an animator and writer, gained a dedicated fanbase for its unique storytelling and animation style. Despite the dissolution of Rooster Teeth, the series’ future is now in the hands of VIZ Media.

The collaboration between VIZ Media and Rooster Teeth to release a manga series based on the Huntsmen and Huntresses of Remnant was a promising sign. With the acquisition of the nine-season original run of the ‘RWBY’ animated program, the future of the series is in good hands. The announcement, made in a video featuring showrunner and co-creator Kerry Shawcross and Barbara Dunkelman, who voices Yang Xiao Long, provides a sense of continuity and reassurance to the fans.

Viz has published manga for the RWBY franchise, including Shirow Miwa’s adaptation of the web animated series in Shueisha’s Ultra Jump magazine from November 2015 to February 2017. Viz Media published the manga in its English edition of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine beginning in October 2017 and published it in print. The company also published Bunta Kinami’s RWBY: The Official Manga manga. Kinami launched the manga in Shonen Jump+ in December 2018 and ended it in June 2020. Additionally, Viz Media published the RWBY manga anthology series.

As we eagerly await the announcement of a tenth season, VIZ Media has reassured us in a blog post that they are ‘exploring the production of new chapters in the RWBY saga.’ More importantly, they have confirmed that showrunner and co-creator Kerry Shawcross, a key figure in the series’ development, ‘will be involved with the next phase’ of the franchise. This involvement provides a sense of continuity and reassurance to the fans, ensuring that the series will stay true to its roots.
