The Russo Brothers teased Chris Evans’ villainous role in their upcoming big-budget spy thriller for Netflix titled The Gray Man on the LCB podcast, calling him a “unique character.”
Rumors of the Russo Brothers transforming Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel of the same name into a thriller movie began in 2014 when the Russos were fresh off making Captain America: The Winter Soldier and were still somewhat unknown directors.
For this highly awaited project, Anthony, and Joe Russo will be returning to Netflix, which is reportedly raising $200 million to fund the spy thriller, making it the streaming service’s most expensive feature film in its history. The Gray Man already features a stunning cast, including Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas, but Chris Evans will star as the movie’s central villain. Tamil superstar Dhanush and Hollywood stars Jessica Henwick, Wagner Moura, and Julia Butters have also joined the cast.
Lately, on the Lights Camera Barstool podcast, the Russo Brothers spoke briefly about their upcoming project and how it is a “modern interpretation of a spy thriller” stimulated by the Bond franchise. They also lauded The Gray Man as “a big pop culture film infused with modern thematics and politics.” Joe Russo also spoke about the role Chris Evans will portray as a villain.
When asked jokingly if Evans will wear a cable knit sweater in The Gray Man like his character in Knives Out,
“Yeah exactly—no he’s going to wear some crazy shit in this one. He’s a really unique character, and this is Evans as a villain, so it’s a really interesting character, and I think he’s going to get to flex quite a bit in this role.”

Though production was delayed back in December, The Gray Man is set to start filming in March 2021, according to the Russos. Gosling will play the film’s lead role, Court Gentry (a former CIA operative-turned-assassin), while Evans will play his adversary, Lloyd Hansen, who formerly worked with Gentry at the CIA. This clash is set to play out on a large global scale.
The Russos have said earlier that The Gray Man will be a CIA intelligence thriller similar to The Winter Soldier, which took place within a contemporary spy network environment.
The Gray Man has the potential to be Netflix’s largest tentpole in terms of popularity and production value, and also to spawn a franchise, considering that there are nine more books of source material in the series.
