Tom Cruise’s wish to be the first one to make a film IN space has just been shattered. Russia, unlike Cruise, is all set to take off for their 12-day shoot in outer space in the first week of October 2021, as reported by Collider.
This comes when there has been no filming schedule or any other information announced for Cruise’s yet-untitled movie.
According to the report, the production team for Russia’s The Challenge, directed by Klim Shipenko, has been training for the Cosmonaut Training in Moscow’s Yuri Gagarin Center over the past year, with their approval for flight.
The Challenge announced a casting call for the lead actress back in December 2020, and with reports of them taking off, it seems like they’ve finalized the cast.
As per Collider, the production team for The Challenge will take off on October 5 if everything goes according to their plan. Shipenko’s team will shoot for 12 days in space and might end up being the first-ever movie in history to be filled in space.
Termed as a ‘space race’ for about a year, the country of Russia and the Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise are battling head-to-head for a slot in the history books. However, with no recent update about Cruise’s project, it seems unlikely that he will be able to overtake The Challenge.
The last we heard was rumors that Universal was ready to pay $200 million to make Cruise’s dream flight come true. He also reportedly has a SpaceX trip scheduled in October. But there haven’t been any confirmation or updates about them till now.
Cruise and his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman are teaming up for this project, but the last Liman talked about it was back in January, but even that did not answer when it might take off.
Channel One CEO Konstantin Ernst said in an interview with Variety that he “certainly would have preferred arriving at the International Space Station at the same time as Tom Cruise.”
Going out of space has now become a piece of cake, what with Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson’s publicized flights. Dreaming about a movie filmed in space can very well be a reality.
Channel One will live stream the event on October 5.
As for Cruise, he has recently finished wrapping up Mission: Impossible 7. His latest upcoming release is Top Gun: Maverick, scheduled to release on May 27, 2022.
