The fourth episode of Rurouni Kenshin Kyoto Disturbance ended with Himura defeating Senkaku in front of Shishio. While Himura could’ve very well cut Senkaku’s head off, he chose to spare him, and he asked Shishio to pick up is sword and fight.
The latest episode of Rurouni Kenshin seems to be quite different from what was expected, as Shishio didn’t even raise his sword against Himura. 2. Rurouni Kenshin Episode 5 Recap
The episode opened with the scene of Himura striking Senkaku down. While this was happening, it would seem that Eiji and Misao were secretly watching how things were unfolding. Later, Saitou caught the two peeking in and invited them in to observe. He then told Himura that it was foolish of him to spare Senkaku. To this, Himura responded, saying that Shishio will not be getting any mercy regardless.
At this point, Shishio spoke up, saying Himura’s technique would have killed Senkaku if he hadn’t used the flat side of his blade. He said he was truly disappointed as Himura had sworn an oath not to kill anyone anymore. After declaring that Himura, who couldn’t bring himself to kill anyone, is far from being able to defeat himself, Shishio fled the place after appointing Soujirou to spar with Himura.
After this, Shishio explained how Soujiro doesn’t perceive or emit “Ki”, that most swordsmen do, which is what makes him really unpredictable and dangerous in battle. Furthermore, he is quite emotionless and violent in comparison to Himura, who has sworn to kill no man. The battle between them had turned into a battle between both of their “Battoujutsu”: their fastest techniques.
The speed at which the two swordsmen swung their swords was the same. However, Soujirou, whose sword had no hesitation in cutting down humans, was one step ahead. His technique snapped Himura’s sword in two. Just when it seemed as if Himura had lost, Soujirou’s sword suddenly started tattering in places and became permanently damaged. With this, the battle between the two was clearly a tie.
After this, Soujirou requested Himura to battle him again some other day and quickly fled to catch up to Shishio. Himura was moderately satisfied with his actions as he could drive Shishio and Senkaku’s threats away from the village. Eiji, however, wasn’t satisfied. He picked up a stray sword on the ground and attempted to murder Senkaku, but Saitou stopped him. Himura then convinced him to respect the wishes of the dead by not turning himself into a murderer.
Soujirou later met up with Shishio, revealed the match’s outcome, and showed him the sword, too. Turns out Himura had destroyed one of the 31 supreme-grade swords. Himura had basically ruined quite a sturdy sword with his technique, and this impressed Shishio quite a lot. He then asked Soujiro to gather all the “Juppon Gatana”. From the name, it sounds like they might be the ten strongest swordsmen under Shishio’s control. He wants to use them in order to draw out Himura’s potential, to turn him into the “Hitokiri” (man-killer) that he used to be long ago.
Later at Himura’s end, Saitou decided to take Eiji over to his place, where his wife would take care of him henceforth. He then requested Himura to return to his previous self (Hitokiri) because he doesn’t stand a chance against Shishio otherwise. After saying this, the two parted ways, and the episode came to an end here.
3. What Will Happen In Episode 6?
Not much about the next episode can be predicted so far since it seems like quite a few problems have settled down with this episode. We’re likely to see a few (if not all) of the “Juppon Gatana” that Shishio spoke of.
Besides this, we can expect to see Misao and Himura on their journey together, getting along the same way they were at the end of episode 5.
