We got to meet another main protagonist. Sagara, who also goes by the name Zanza, is an underground fighter who takes up beating people for money. He had a pretty light-hearted encounter with Kenshin the first time they met.

However, things changed when the Himura brothers hired him to defeat Shimura Battosai. He got all serious and seemed even to despise Kenshin’s ideology. They got on with the battle, which just began at the end of the episode.

Kenshin and Sanosuke’s fight will get intense in episode 4 of Rurouni Kenshin 2023, titled “And Then, Another

Sanosuke is unlike any enemy Kenshin met till now. Kenshin’s technique gets him the victory with just one blow, but Sanouske seems unfazed by the attack despite getting thrown quite far away.

Well, their battle will end on a friendly term by the end of the episode, and Sanosuke might even join Kenshin and Kaoru in their journey. We will also get some insight into Sanosuke’s backstory and what he went through to become what he is.

3. Episode 4 Recap

Kaoru finds an old ink painting of her grandfather and is delighted that they can now get money by selling the painting. They go to Tae’s restaurant. Some drunk men are arguing over some political ideas.

While arguing, one of them throws a vase at the other, but it hits Kenshin. Tae tries to cool them down, but one of them hits her away. A boy shows up, challenging them to have a fight with him.

The boy easily takes care of the strongest of them. He defeats the big one with just one flick on the forehead. Another one tries to take out a blade, but Kenshin warns him from doing anything like that.

The men leave. The boy praises Kenshin for not dodging the vase so that Kaoru doesn’t get hurt. He says goodbye and leaves. Later, the boy, named Zanza, meets the Hiruma brothers.

The brothers have escaped from prison, and now they want to hire Zanza to kill Kenshin. He declines at first, but after hearing about Battosai, he agrees to take the job.

He goes to the dojo and calls out Kenshin. He seems to know almost everything about Kenshin’s past and challenges him to have a fight with him. Kenshin is reluctant to fight.

Zanza expresses his anger against the imperialist ideology and gets desperate to fight Kenshin. Kenshin wants to know why Zanza picks up such jobs when he has such a straightforward personality.

Kenshin confirms from him that the Hiruma brothers have ordered him for this job. The brothers show themselves. Zanza finds Kihei hiding a gun. They decide to go somewhere open to have their fight.

Zanza takes out his sword and introduces himself as Sanosuke Sagara. He carries the giant sword Zanbato. They begin their battle. Kenshin throws Sagara with one blow.

Yahiko thinks Kenshin has won, but Sagara stands up again, leaving Kaoru shocked as it is the first time an enemy stands strong even after getting hit by Kenshin.

Rurouni Kenshin is a manga series written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki. It was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1994 to 1999. The 2023 series will be a reboot of the 1996 series, re-adapting the original manga.

In the Meiji era, 11th year, Kenshin Himura is a wandering samurai who was once feared as an assassin. However, he has taken a vow to never kill people and atone for his crimes.

He comes across Kaoru Kamiya, the head of a small dojo that is on the verge of shutting down, because of a man who is killing in the name of her dojo.
