Rumors Hint at PlayStation State of Play Event Coming Very Soon

Sony has ditched appearing at E3 for the second consecutive year, making it clear their Nintendo Direct-like PlayStation State of Play events are their preferred method of getting news out to fans.

The video presentations often give new looks at upcoming PS4 and PS5 games and usually always carry a great deal of hype. While there is usually a decent amount of time between events, new rumors have suggested that we may be getting on slated for next week.

This comes from GamesRadar’s James Jarvis, who stated that this event could take place on Thursday, August 19th. While it was previously believed that Sony would announce the next State of Play date on August 10th, that clearly didn’t happen. However, that doesn’t rule out August 19th being the date of the next event.

In the upcoming State of Play, Jarvis speculates the event will include the official announcement of the Horizon Forbidden West delay, along with some fresh gameplay footage. While industry insiders have reported the delay, we haven’t received any official statement from Sony themselves.

He also feels we may get a new look at Kena: Bridge of Spirits, an update on Gran Turismo 7, and a “new surprise announcement.”

The “surprise announcement” could be more informational on God of War: Ragnarok, or whatever the sequel to the 2018 game is called.

Ragnarok has been delayed to 2022, while it was believed to have a 2021 release, so one must think that fans will get their first look at the game before this year ends. But, it could be something else entirely, so don’t let your hopes soar too high.

Jarvis himself stressed in his tweets that all this was speculation and rumor. But it would make sense for Sony to host a State of Play sooner rather than later.

Sony’s 2021 holiday release list is looking very bare when compared to the competition, so it would do well for them to build some hype for games planned in the future.

It’s also worth noting that Gamescom 2021 is taking place this month, and Xbox is scheduled to host a presentation. No word of Sony’s involvement in Gamescom 2021 has yet been released, so it may want to keep attention on itself through its State of Play event.
