The newly released trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 introduces Rocket Raccoon’s home planet. The mysterious, alien planet seems quite similar to Earth. The film will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is all set to focus on Rocket’s origin story. The trailer features the Guardians traveling to an alien planet with anthropomorphized animals like Rocket himself. It shows human-like bats, panda people and many other hybrid animals.
However, fans did not expect Rocket’s home planet to be so similar to Earth, but it seems like it is an adaptation of two popular locations from the Marvel comics – Counter-Earth and Half-world.
The upcoming MCU movie is one of the most anticipated releases of 2023. James Gunn himself called Rocket Raccoon one of his favorite characters from the MCU. While speaking to Deadline, Gunn also mentioned the following –
” I love the character of Rocket more than any character I’ve ever dealt with before, and I needed to finish his story and that is what Volume 3 is about.”
The trailer begins with the latest ship of the Guardians, Bowie, flying over a very familiar-looking planet with human beings and buildings. But upon landing, it is revealed that the planet is actually filled with hybrid animals but is quite similar to Earth.
The mysterious planet is actually connected to the film’s main antagonist, a human biologist named High Evolutionary. The biologist becomes obsessed with the idea of controlling evolution and masters genetic research in the Marvel comics. He is in fact also responsible for giving Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver their powers.
High Evolutionary ended up experimenting on himself as well, resulting in his intellect being enhanced to a point where he could outsmart any other human being. In the comics, he creates Counter-Earth as a result of his experiments and fills the planet with his “New-Men” who are artificial human-animal hybrids.
The GOTG Volume 3 trailer shows us the MCU’s interpretation of High Evolutionary’s artificially created planet. However, they’ve combined Counter-Earth with Rocket Raccoon’s home planet, Halfworld.
According to the comics, Rocket and his soulmate, Lylla, originate on a planet called Halfworld from the Keystone Quadrant. The two appear in the latest trailer, although they have nothing to do with Counter-Earth in the original comics.
Halfworld is populated by robot stewards who use genetic engineering to modify the awareness and intelligence of terrestrial animals. These stewards genetically modified animals who were left as companions to patients in a psychiatric ward. As a result, Halfworld is full of such genetically-modified terrestrial animals.
Only time will tell whether the MCU will refer to the planet as Counter-Earth or Halfworld. But from what we see in the trailer, it has more in common with Counter-Earth than Halfworld. Apart from Rocket, Volume 3 will most likely deal with other escapees of Counter-Earth as well.
Cosmo the space dog is another anthropomorphized dog who was first introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. James Gunn previously stated that Cosmo’s elaborate role in the Holiday Special is important in the context of Vol. Thus, we can assume that our psychic canine will have a major role in the upcoming MCU movie.
Another human-like animal in the MCU is Howard the Duck, who also first appeared in Vol. 1 and took part in the final battle in Avengers: Endgame. He could also be connected to High Evolutionary’s world. Although in the Marvel comics, Howard the Duck originates in an alternate dimension, the MCU could easily play around with his origins in the film.
Counter-Earth also has strong connections to Marvel’s cosmic hero, Adam Warlock, who will be portrayed by Will Poulter in Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3. The film will most likely tell the story of how the Guardians free Counter-Earth from High Evolutionary’s authoritarian regime and save Rocket’s home planet from his tyranny.
