As Riverdale’s Season 5 prepares to return with its second half on August 11, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa hints at romance budding between Archie and Betty in the time to come.
In the popular comics, which the show is based on, Betty and Veronica have often found themselves feuding over Archie. While this premise was explored in the earlier bits of the show, Archie and Betty’s romantic relationship eventually fizzled out as Archie realized his deeper feelings for Veronica.
Things have changed in the course of the five-ish seasons, especially due to the major time-leap taken in Season 5. This leap changed dynamics for the show’s primary couples, both whom parted ways from each other — Veronica ended up marrying a Wall Street trader instead of Archie and Jughead who broke up with Betty after high school now has a romance with Tabitha Tate.
Will this make room for Archie and Betty to give their relationship another whirl? As reported in TV Line, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa answers a fan question about a possible Barchie romance, especially in the light that the showrunner had once called it, “more than just a booty call”. Here’s how Aguirre-Sacasa responded:
LOL. That’s fair. But I will add: Betty and Archie’s story isn’t over yet, and their relationship does deepen, especially as we enter the last stretch of episodes.

In the past, Archie and Betty’s former flames have always been hindrances to the “What could’ve been…” While the two have remain good friends and confidants in tough moments, it seems that the remaining few episodes of Season 5 could be a new chapter for them.
There is no knowing if the two will actually get into a relationship or not, but if Aguirre-Sacasa’s words are anything to go by, Barchie may at least give it a try. There is, of course, no satisfying fans who rallying on either side of the two ships, continuing this age-old debate of whether Archie will end up with Betty or Veronica till the end of time.
