The Riverdale gang will finally be able to enjoy their high school prom after several months of coronavirus delays. With the thrilling new season coming up on The CW and Netflix in January, the first trailer released on Twitter has hinted at some major plot twists. Here’s everything you need to know about (& expect from) the latest Riverdale season.
As fans would know, before Riverdale’s season 4 came to a premature end due to the COVID-led production lockdown. Season 5 is ready to finish off storylines from season 4, with the students finding a way to defeat Mr. Honey.
What happens when the long-awaited prom is here, the mystery behind a town voyeur sending tapes to everyone needs revealing, and finally what will be the future of the love quadrangle – Betty, Jughead, Archie, and Veronica.
“We’re essentially starting the season with the last three episodes of season 4, and partly because they’re dynamite episodes,”
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told EW
“I mean big, big, big changes happen. We are continuing the mystery and the relationship drama straight into season 5.”
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told EW
1. When is Riverdale Season 5 Out?
“This will be the last dance with our friends,” says Archie to Veronica in the Season 5 trailer and after the boxing match, “Can’t miss it.”
Join the last dance on January 20, 2021! We are still waiting for a complete cast confirmation, but we assume series regulars Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse, Madelaine Petsch, Camila Mendes, and KJ Apa will be back for season 5.
2. Does Ronnie Know About Betty & Archie?
Amid a series of bombs the Season 5 trailer dropped on us, the biggest one had to be Veronica admitting that something was going on between her best friend and boyfriend.
She seems to have learned about last season’s brief but passionate fling between her Archie and Betty. “Something happened between Betty and Archie,” sobs a gorgeous Ronnie in what looks like her prom dress. (That must have hit hard!)
Archie and Betty’s intimacy is not new to Riverdale. In previous seasons, the duo had even publicly faked intimacy as part of a trap to draw out the person who tried to kill Jughead.
That plan succeeded under the approval of Jughead and Veronica, who too shared a kiss. The only problem was, while Ronnie and Jughead did it to balance things off, Archie and Betty kept going and reigniting their old feelings.
3. Why Does Betty Have a Gun?
The season 5 trailer offers a closer look at the long-awaited prom night for Riverdale teens. Amid the romantic drama and scary masked-guy scenes, viewers were in for one incredibly nerve-racking moment – Betty is shown with a gun.
“Is everyone having a good time tonight?”
Veronica
They are at La Bonne Nuit when we see Betty in the Cooper/Jones/Smith house brandishing a firearm. Where did she get the gun, and who is stalking Betty this time?
4. Who Was The Hanging Man?
The trailer also features a hanging man. In a fisheye lens view of what seems to be the abandoned cabin inhabited by The Voyeur from last season, Betty and Jughead are seen observing a masked man hanging from a noose.
Yep, it is the owl mask. So is this the sad end of the Voyeur mystery? Or another twist in the making?
“I’m never going to get that image out of my head.”
Betty
5. Who is The Voyeur?
The trailer gives us a glimpse of the latest footage from The Voyeur’s videotapes. It is shaky camera footage of Betty and Jughead sleeping.
In case you forgot, one of the big mysteries in Season 4 was the identity of The Voyeur, the mysterious group that was first taking video of people’s doors, then recreating murders. Now they seem to be wandering in people’s houses to watch them sleep. Or is it someone on the inside?
Meanwhile, we catch a glimpse of The Voyeur again. On one of their investigations, Jughead and Betty are at a flophouse rave where they see someone in a bizarre owl mask filming them.
The Voyeur(s) showed up last season wearing similar masks, but so far, they’ve been classic comic book versions of the show’s characters. So who is behind the mask? And why an owl?
6. What Happens to Jughead – Makeup or Breakup?
What is a Riverdale trailer without some steam blowing off its ears! It is Jughead and Betty, but they are not in your regular Riverdale-sque teen coitus.
There is something very adult about their expressions. Jughead is visibly sad as he looks at a sadder Betty undressing before laying on top of him. Jughead has to know about Betty and Archie. So are they making up or breaking up?
7. Why is Archie in a Graveyard?
Post-prom, we see Archie watching a Voyeur video recreating the serial killer Black Hood’s attack on him in Pop’s.
“It doesn’t make any sense.”
Sweaty Archie
Though the context implies he’s talking about the video, I’d venture it’s more likely he is once again visiting the grave of his departed father, Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), to try and figure out his feelings for Veronica and Betty.
8. Is Jellybean in Danger?
In yet another Voyeur-istic glimpse of someone sleeping in their bed, we see a chopping knife run across Jellybean’s face.
Though she’s been suspected of being a part of the Voyeur mystery, the delicate knife caressing she gets while asleep in her bed seems to take any suspicion off of her.
9. “Something’s coming!” What’s coming?
In a voice of prescience, we hear Bret Wallis announcing something strange to Betty and Jughead when they visit him in prison. “Something’s coming, and it’s going to hit you like a Mack truck,” he tells them.
Who is he talking about? Is it a metaphor related to The Voyeur or premonition of a road accident? Especially since we already know that after the time jump in Season 5, a trucker is seen prowling The Lonely Highway with a blonde woman running away from the 18-wheeler.
10. About Riverdale
Based on a story from the popular Archies Comics, the 2017 Netflix drama Riverdale is centered on an innocent, small town of the same name.
It follows a group of high school students who are shocked by the death of a classmate, Jason Blossom. Together they unravel the secrets of Riverdale and who killed Jason.
Riverdale cast includes Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), who lives with his father, Fred (Luke Perry), who’s separated from Archie’s mother, Mary (Molly Ringwald). Archie’s best friends are Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).
Cole Sprouse’s grungy Jughead is the show’s narrator and school reporter who almost acts like its ‘Gossip Girl’ — documenting the characters’ lives and filling in the blanks for us.
