Riverdale is a popular American teen drama series based on the characters of Archie Comics.
Season 6 of the long-running young adult series has just begun on The CW and features a stellar ensemble cast, including KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, and Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones.
The show centers on a young group of teenagers in a small town as they discover that a local teenager has been murdered.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Season 7 would be Riverdale’s last. Despite a loyal fan base, many hailed the announcement as long overdue, considering the wild ride the show has taken its viewers on over the years.
Fans of Riverdale have been shocked by compelling plot twists and turns at every turn, including but not limited to a major time jump, musical dance numbers, a drug called “jingle jangle”, alternate dimensions, hallucinations, murders, cults, and high-society elites.
In Season 6, Riverdale introduced viewers to a multiverse that included Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Kiernan Shipka), Percival Pickens, time travel, and the lead trio of Archie, Betty, and Jughead developing superpowers.
In an interview with Collider, Riverdale’s Aguirre-Sacasa discusses the plotline for the final season. Despite being vague about specifics, Aguirre-Sacasa promises a shocking conclusion to the series.
“I had an idea for where it was gonna end, and we were going there, but then when we were wrapping up Season 6 and having conversations about Season 7, a new idea came in that we’re really excited about.”
Riverdale’s cancelation comes shortly after the network canceled several other series, including Dynasty, Charmed, and Legacies. As Riverdale comes to a close, great care seems to be taken to make it a successful conclusion.
Given that Shipka has confirmed that Sabrina Spellman will return for Riverdale season 7, it’s safe to assume the showrunners are completing the series in a way that makes sense and respects the fans.
It remains to be seen how Riverdale will end, especially with its showrunner admitting his own shock over the direction of the final season.
About Riverdale
Based on a story from the popular Archies Comics, the 2017 Netflix drama Riverdale is centered on an innocent, small town of the same name.
It follows a group of high school students who are shocked by the death of a classmate, Jason Blossom. Together they unravel the secrets of Riverdale and who killed Jason.
Cole Sprouse’s grungy Jughead is the show’s narrator and school reporter who almost acts like its ‘Gossip Girl’ — documenting the characters’ lives and filling in the blanks for us.
