Walt Disney’s vision was that theme parks should never be finished and should continue to grow and adapt. Nowadays, it is also supported by the addition of Marvel and Star Wars-related content in the parks.
Ryan Reynolds and the co-director of Strange World, Qui Nguyen have decided to take it further by planning a feature film based on Disney theme parks’ Society of Explorers and Adventurers.
Disney World and Disneyland have dramatically impacted the entire world since their inception, thanks to their capacity to immerse and excite visitors with their myriad attractions and smartly planned layout (and, of course, the rollercoasters!).
Since the audience is familiar with the theme parks and attractions, Disney has capitalized on this by turning several well-known characters and rides into full-length feature films.
The first one that comes to mind is Dwayne Johnson’s Jungle Cruise. Even though it debuted to mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office, but it is getting a sequel regardless.
The second is Pirates of the Caribbean, which has proven to be immensely successful.
Disney has also tried other rides like Country Bears, Mission to Mars, Tomorrowland, and The Haunted Mansion, but they have mostly underperformed at the box office.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Reynolds and Qui Nguyen will collaborate to create a motion picture version of the Society of Adventurers and Explorers.
The movie will be a stand-alone production that explores the world of SEA in the present and will include new concepts and mystical elements not found in the original attractions.
The audience shouldn’t confuse this feature film with Ron Moore’s current work related to Disney’s Magic Kingdom, as both will be different.
Nguyen will write the new feature, and Reynolds will direct and produce it through his Maximum Effort company.
Could Society of Explorers and Adventurers Be Disney’s Next Big Thing?
A fictitious group called The Society of Explorers and Adventurers is set inside the Disney theme parks.
According to them, they were established on August 12, 1538, in Porto Paradiso, Italy. Adventurers, artists, scientists, and others who tour the world in search of fresh discoveries and adventures made up the group.
The characters have been mentioned and linked to the park’s many attractions, including Barnabas T. Bullion for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Camellia Falco for Soarin’, and Harrison Hightower III for The Tower of Terror.
The television series and film are supposed to be expanded into a franchise that could even share cross-over creatives with other franchises like the MCU!
We can hope for this to happen in the future, given that the Hawkeye directors are currently developing the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad movie and Scarlett Johansson is in the development crew of a new Tower of terror movie!
Society of Explorers and Adventurers is one of the prime Disney theme park attractions and Nguyen and Reynolds are the perfect pairings for hitting the bull’s eye with this project. Both have experience working in this sector with Nguyen’s Raya and the Last Dragon and Reynold’s fun action sensibilities in movies like Deadpool and The Adam Project.
In the meantime, the audience can look forward to the next Disney Park movie, The Haunted Mansion, which is scheduled to release on August 11, 2023.
