Reverse-Flash, played by Tom Cavanagh, has had a tricky past in the Arrowverse series. Cavanagh originally appeared on the show as Eddie Thawne, Iris West’s former fiancé, though he died in the season 1 finale in 2015.
Cavanagh had the opportunity to return to the series once again as Eobard Thawne, also known as Reverse-Flash, who had assumed the appearance of Eddie after traveling into the future.
“Negative, Part Two” was the season 8 finale of The Flash, which aired on June 29, 2022. Cavanagh appears in that episode as Negative Reverse-Flash, who represents the Negative Forces as a whole.
Having fought The Flash in a climactic battle, the character was assumed dead, however, that just might not be the case.
Eric Wallace, the showrunner of The Flash, has teased that viewers might not have seen the last of Tom Cavanagh on the show yet.
Showrunner Eric Wallace teased a little bit about Reverse-Flash on The Flash during a post-mortem session with TVLine following the season 8 finale.
Although he insists that Reverse-Flash and Negative Reverse-Flash are dead, he tells readers that “it’s a comic book show.”
Death isn’t always permanent in comic books. While he doesn’t go too much into the details, he suggests that “you might see Tom Cavanagh again.” Since Cavanagh has appeared on The Flash for 138 episodes so far, it doesn’t seem unlikely.
It is possible that Wallace had initially thought that this episode would be the series finale for The Flash, thus explaining the climactic death of Reverse-Flash.
Earlier this year, many series on The CW were abruptly canceled, including the Arrowverse series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Naomi, and Batwoman.
It’s possible that the writers were informed that the series would be renewed for season 9 after the final episode was written. Being unable to change the fates of every single character they had already decided on, they might have gone with the initial plot.
Another thing to note is that Wallace did not specify in what form Cavanagh would appear in his statement.
While this quote could indicate a return of some kind of Reverse-Flash, it could also indicate that Cavanagh will have yet another role in the series.
As longtime fans know, The Flash has always been filled with great twists and turns. Fans might have to wait till the season 9 premiere to find out what happens.
