Nearly a decade after Michael C. Hall bid farewell to the blood-loving serial killer Dexter Morgan, he’s back reprising the role in the upcoming limited series Dexter: New Blood.
In an interview with ETOnline, the actor called the experience of stepping back into the shoes of the dark persona “really wide” and “creepy.”
Hall also answered the question every Dexter fan has been waiting to know—why now? He even shared what it was like getting back in the role of the forensic expert/serial killer.
The actor said that Dexter Morgan was very well alive in his body and mind, implying that he could connect to the character instantly as the cameras started rolling. Hall described this connection with the character as “reassuring” but added that it was nevertheless “creepy.”
It was really wild. I didn’t know really what to expect but I found that once I showed up and started shooting that he was still very, very much alive. He was still very familiar. He is obviously in a completely different context [and] has come a long way from where we left him but he was still very available to me, which was reassuring and creepy.

He also explained the reason behind the show coming back after several years. New Blood focuses on Dexter’s relationship with his abandoned son, Harrison (to be essayed by Jack Alcott), and they had to wait till Harrison grew up.
While they easily could’ve time jumped, the years also give fans “a bit of a surprise”. The stills previously released of the family reunion are also filled with tension.
Hall’s portrayal of Dexter Morgan was applauded by many, especially because he is a complete contrast to the character in real life. Dexter’s social awkwardness, the desire to be aloof, strategically killing people hiding behind the mask of a forensic analyst in the city’s police department, was one of the rising dark dramas that fans enjoyed.
The 10-episode limited series of Dexter: New Blood will start airing every Tuesday from November 7, 2021, on Showtime.
