You’re gonna wanna turn the sound way up for this one.
Developer Headware Games and publisher Ratalaika Games will launch Chasing Static for PS1-style horror fanatics on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and, Switch. A demo is currently available for trial on Steam and while no exact date has been announced, the full version is set to launch in Q3 2021.
Chasing Static plunges you into the ghost ridden wilderness of rural Wales as Chris Selwood. While seeking refuge from a raging storm, Chris stumbles upon the remains of a mysterious facility and is prompted to investigate the disappearance of nearby villagers.
The game will see players, as Chris, use sonic exploration through audio mechanics to search for “anomalies” in the environment. While the main story of the game runs for only two hours, its contemporary spin on a walking sim with voice acting, non-linear exploration, and a new sound-driven approach to gameplay should get players their money’s worth.
Headware founder Nathan Hamley credits the game’s retro PS1 feel to the cult-classic horror games that game out during the PlayStation era.
“The PlayStation era had so many great horror games that made an impact on me and gave me nightmares for years,”
Nathan Hamley
“Chasing Static is my attempt to pay homage to those classics and that visual style while scarring a whole new generation with ideas I’ve had percolating for a while.”
Nathan Hamley
The game’s ‘About’ page also shouts out 80s Sci-Fi horror and contemporary surrealist cinema and dives into the features of the game which will include the following:
- Sonic Exploration – Audio driven gameplay mechanics have you hunting anomalies with an experimental Frequency Displacement Monitoring Device.
- Lo-Fi, Hi-Fi – Crunchy low poly visuals reminiscent of PS1 classics with full voice acting, high quality sound design and a modern approach to gameplay.
