Resident Evil on Netflix Will Not Be Returning for a Season 2

Netflix’s Resident Evil TV series adaptation has been officially canceled after one season. The series will not be returning for Season 2.

The series premiered on Netflix in July of this year and marked the most recent adaptation of the video game series of the same name. Several films have been made in the franchise previously, but the series took a different route.

The series was set in a different universe from the films and games, though some game characters and plotlines made their way into the adaptation.

Although Resident Evil made it to the list of Netflix’s top 5 viewed TV shows this month, the series received low ratings and harsh criticism from the audience. Moreover, it fell out of Netflix’s top 10 list after merely three weeks. It had some of the lowest Rotten Tomatoes ratings out of all of the streaming platform’s original series.

Reviews from critics were slightly better but not favorable. The series received criticism regarding plotholes, cliches, and pacing issues. The series tried to put a young adult spin on the horror classic, which seems to have disappointed many.

Creator Andrew Dabb had earlier discussed narrative ideas that could take the series through a couple more seasons. But all that’s pointless now that the series will not be returning for Season 2.

Given how Netflix operates, it is difficult for a new series to survive an early slump, like in the case of Resident Evil. Several shows that are now considered classics have had a slow start, including Breaking Bad, The Office US, and The Wire. However, it is hard to say whether Resident Evil had the potential to become something big in the future.

Resident Evil’s cancelation was not much of a loss for Netflix since it was competing with various Netflix originals, such as Stranger Things and Sweet Tooth. Although the Netflix adaptation has been canceled, there’s a lot more in the franchise for fans to cherish and enjoy.

As of now, there are no shows or movie adaptations on the cards, but the future could be different. As of now, fans can look forward to the next Resident Evil game that will release in 2024.

About Resident Evil (Netflix)

Resident Evil is an American action horror streaming television series developed by Andrew Dabb for Netflix. Loosely based on the video game series of the same name by Capcom, it is the second television adaptation of the franchise and the third live-action adaptation after the film series of the same name. The series is set in its own universe but features the video game series’ storyline as its backstory and basis.

The series features an ensemble cast led by Lance Reddick as the clones of Albert Wesker, Ella Balinska and Adeline Rudolph as Wesker’s children, Tamara Smart and Siena Agudong as the daughters’ younger selves, and Paola Núñez as James Marcus’s daughter Evelyn. It alternates between two timelines, following Jade and Billie Wesker during their days in New Raccoon City where they discover their father’s and Umbrella Corporation’s dark secrets, and 14 years in the future, where Jade tries to survive the end of the world.
