Requiem of the Rose King touches the sensitive topic of non-binary gender identity with an intersex protagonist born in ancient England. The period is famous for its dark academia aesthetics, wars, prejudices, and controversial yet epic romances.
The story also covers a fair share of the brutal reality of that romanticized era by showing the greed of people, hunger for power, and intolerance towards several communities. This includes the poor, the women, those with different skin colors, and of course, the LGBTQIA+.
This manga recently announced its anime adaptation, for which we cannot wait any longer.
The dark fantasy and historical anime Requiem of the Rose King will premiere on January 9, 2022.
The franchise revealed a new key visual featuring the protagonist Richard III and the main characters from House of York and House of Lancaster.

The plot revolves around the intersex protagonist Richard III who is despised by his mother yet adored by his father. Richard’s mother calls him a devil who will be the downfall of the York family.
If that wasn’t enough, Richard is tormented in his dreams by one of England’s greatest enemies, the French warrior Joan of Arc. She is believed to be an evil witch by the people of England and comes in Richard’s dreams to tell him he’ll ruin the House of York.
With so much going on with him, Richard decided that the only way to repent for his ‘sins’ and attain salvation was to help his father become the King of England.
Moreover, the franchise also revealed some additional cast that will be joining the team, and we have it all right here for you:
Character | Cast | Other Works |
Lady Anne Neville | Sayumi Suzushiro | Kurena Kukumila (86) |
Lady Isabel Neville | Ayumi Mano | Anastasia (Isekai Cheat Magician) |
Queen Elizabeth | Shizuka Itou | Irina Jelavic (Assassination Classroom) |
Cecily Neville | Aya Hisakawa | Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury (Sailor Moon) |
Anime explores all kinds of possibilities and genres, some might be bizarre, but some are important and should be discussed. The discrimination and torment faced by those who are different are still prevalent even after years.
Although I agree it’s not as grave as it used to be 100 years ago, we still have a long way to go. Shows like this might change people’s mentality or even prove to be educational, and I cannot wait for the anime to come out.
