Warner Bros. has unveiled the official trailer for Hugh Jackman’s upcoming film Reminiscence, coming to theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on Aug 30. The actor plays the role of a private investigator who offers his clients a chance to relive their memories.
Nick Bannister’s life changes when he comes across Mae (Rebecca Ferguson), a woman shrouded in mystery with whom he begins a passionate love affair. But when she disappears without a trace, he must look into the past to find out more about her.
Warner Bros. debuted the film’s official trailer on Thursday, which provides a deeper look at what’s to follow from the teaser Jackman shared in February. From the sunken Miami in the near future, where Jackman and co-star Thandiwe Newton operate their business, to the tech they use on their clients, the trailer builds up a bewildering yet fascinating world.
With the noir-style investigative story and fascinating sci-fi elements, Reminiscence is set to be a breakout hit. The film industry has been lacking original sci-fi projects these days, which could play to the upcoming movie’s advantage.
Although it is not backed by an already established IP, Reminiscence’s exciting plot, ensemble cast, and director Lisa Joy’s Westworld success make for an intriguing mix. The trailer does an excellent job of portraying the world Joy has created (and also solely written) and keeps audiences hooked to the compelling mystery.
Rebecca Ferguson’s Mae is played with equal parts enigma and sensuousness, but who she really is and what she is caught up in won’t be revealed until the movie’s release in August. Jackman, though, is the real star of the film, and fans are excited to see him dive into this new character.
Most of his recent ventures have seen him play real-life figures or established fictional characters. Still, Reminiscence will allow the actor to explore a brand-new universe altogether. Furthermore, fans of The Greatest Showman are more excited than others since the movie will see Jackman reunite with Ferguson, nonetheless in a much different position than the musical and involving romantic chemistry.
Reminiscence brings in comparisons to movies like Christopher Nolan’s Memento and even Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, both of which are based on memory. Where it imitates Memento’s investigative nature it holds onto the romantic aspect from the latter.
But will the upcoming movie stand to its hyped expectations and become a success like the others? Only time will tell.
