Conjuring 3 takes its title from the real-life court case that originated the phrase “the devil made me do it” back in the 1980s. The film is based on a real-life murder case.
A new featurette has recently been released by Warner Bros. Pictures, featuring the real-life persons involved in the case. Although they aren’t credited as makers on the spinoff, the video features an interview with Arne Johnson’s wife Debbie, who witnessed the murder.
In February 1981, 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson was charged with murder for stabbing his landlord, Alan Bono, to death. During the trial, Johnson became the first person to claim a defense of demonic possession in a United States court, even though this version of events was not accepted by the judge who claimed it to be “irrelative and unscientific.”
After the jury deliberated for more than three days, Johnson was convicted of first-degree manslaughter on November 24, 1981, and was sentenced to between 10 and 20 years in prison.
He was released in 1986 after serving only five years of his sentence. Arne Johnson married Debbie Glatzel while he was in prison, and the pair went on to have two children.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will star paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren dealing with this dark case involving a murder. Both the previous parts of The Conjuring franchise have also depended on real-life stories of the Perron and Hodgson families.
It goes without saying that The Devil Made Me Do It will dramatize the narration and take liberties with the truth to make the story more interesting. Bono has also been renamed in the movie as Bruno Sauls.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It comes out in cinemas and on HBO Max on June 4, 2021.
