2. Episode 37 Preview & Speculation
The preview for Episode 37 was not shown, nor the title revealed at the end of episode 36.
However, based on the ending of the current episode, we know that Subaru has a lot of hardships coming his way with Beatrice’s death, Maylie becoming a new threat, and Elsa’s inability to die!
3. Recap Of Episode 36
I. Beatrice’s Wish
At the beginning of the current episode, we see Beatrice and Subaru in conversation.
Beatrice explains that her contract with Echidna for the last 400 years was pointless and as a result, she has given up on life.
She has come to the library to find the one who can kill her because as a spirit, she cannot commit suicide.
Maylie Portroute, who we were introduced to in Season 1 makes an appearance in the episode, with the incredibly powerful ability to control mabeasts.
We then witness a short yet epic battle between Beatrice and Elsa. Beatrice’s power is in full display as she uses shadow magic to attack Elsa.
The interesting feature about this attack is that shadow magic is only used as defensive magic but Beatrice crystallizes the mana and transforms it into offensive magic.
Elsa is crystallized and then shatters to pieces. Just as we believe it is all over, we learn that Elsa has a magical technique that allows her to escape death unbeknownst to her attacker.
She suddenly shows up behind Beatrice and stabs her in the back, giving her the death she so desperately wished for. As she takes her last breath, Beatrice teleports Subaru back to the Sanctuary.
II. Roswaal’s Betrayal
Subaru runs into Emilia as he enters the Tomb and notices that she has become mentally unstable without Puck by her side supporting her.
Subaru then learns that Roswaal has gained knowledge about his “Return by Death” ability, but seems to have a slight misunderstanding as to how it works.
He is unaware that Subaru must die for the loop to start over. Roswaal kills Ram and Garfiel in cold-blood to force Subaru into a corner so that he can restart the loop for Roswaal’s benefit.
He is tired of the current loop and wishes to restart. To push Subaru towards beginning the loop again, Roswaal allows himself to be devoured when Big Chungus appears while Subaru escapes.
