Penguindrum is an anime that tricks you with cute penguins and characters but actually makes you experience some tragic and traumatizing storylines. Despite this, it became widely popular among supernatural fans.
So, it was only natural for these fans to get excited when the franchise announced a two-part compilation film with new footage and improved animation. The first part came out recently in April, and the second part’s promotion has already started.
Director Kunihiko Ikuhara’s staff has revealed a special promotional video for the RE:cycle of Penguindrum compilation films. The second film, ‘Boku wa Kimi o Aishiteru’ (I Love You), premieres on July 22, 2022.
It also previews the second part’s opening theme, ‘Boku no Sonzai Shōmei’ (Proof of My Existence) by Yakushimaru Etsuko Metro Orchestra.
The video includes scenes from the first film with some additional footage and animation sequences. It starts with clips we’ve seen before in both the 2011 anime series and the first part of the compilation film.
Along with scenes from the film that introduces all the main characters, we are shown Kanba and Shoma as kids entering a mysterious library. As they make their way through the library, the penguin-hat Himari appears before them.
Moreover, we see more scenes from the Takakura siblings’ childhoods while Ringo looks longingly at a happy picture of her parents with her sister Momoka. The trailer ends with the event that started it all, when Himari first died in the hospital, only to be revived by the penguin hat later.
To say that I’m excited about the second compilation film is an understatement. No other storyline takes you into a spiral of psychological trauma with cute penguin characters, and I’m here for it all.
Although, I do hope we get a better closure in the second film than in the anime series’ finale.
