Paramount+ Original Rabbit/Hole premiered on the network in late March 2023 and wrapped up its short eight-episode season this week. With a surprising finale and high stakes at the end, John Weir finally unmasks Crowley, who planned to bring the US to its knees.
Although, after the final scene, viewers are confused whether the danger has been thwarted or merely postponed. The show’s creators, John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, sat down with ScreenRant and discussed the finale and even revealed that Ben would have ended up as a casualty in an earlier draft of season 1’s eighth and last episode.
We entertained Ben not making it, but we liked Charles out too much, so he pulled through. He’s just a delight to work with and to write for.
The creator’s duo also spoke on the final scene, which indicates that maybe Crowley isn’t dead after all and that Peter Weller’s iteration of him was just a decoy.
I would say that thematically in this show, the fact that it could or could not be is what’s important. I think it’s a completion of Ben’s season arc to be able to get what he wanted with his son’s help.
Ben reveals he is John’s thought-to-be-dead father, and together they work to unmask Crowley. John moves with the “Homm Plan,” where Ed will go on air and reveal he is not dead and how Crowley and the corrupt people in power intend to use the Shared Data Act to manipulate the nation to their liking.
But as he sets up the broadcast, Agent Madi arrests Weir and brings him to the FBI office. Hailey jumps into action and takes Ed through the city for public viewing while Ben goes to John’s house to ensure Liv and Samuel’s safety.
The three are attacked and taken into custody by Crowley, while Ben escapes with Madi’s help, who he had warned before the shit hit the fan. Dodging the hurdles at ABN, they manage to get Ed in, but Crowley reveals his bargaining chip just as they prepare to start the broadcast. Dum-dum-daaaah!
And yet, Weir was ten steps ahead of Crowley this whole time! After thwarting an almost fatal kidnapping of his wife, John had placed an assassin in his spouse’s stead, and he revealed she was with Ben and Crowley at that moment. A brutal fight sequence later, Ben pulls the plug on Crowley, and the wily intern at ABN escapes under John’s nose.
But that was not the only intended twist in the episode. The showrunners also posted a final scene at the end of the episode, potentially setting up a season 2.
Ben notices an earpiece in the ear of the dead “Crowley,” picking it up, he listens in disbelief, leading the audience to believe he might have been a puppet of the real mastermind.
