The escapades of the mad geezer Rick and the easily influenced teen Morty don’t need an introduction. Whether it’s those sci-fi quests in the infinite universes, slapstick humor, zany and witty dialogues, terrific animation, or the occasional poignant hit-hards, you will find yourself completely hinged to this solidly constructed show.
There have been five seasons to date, with the fifth one still running. And you might think: “This is a cartoon. Why do I need to search for a watch order when I can just watch the episodes randomly?”
Ooh, Wee! This might be true for some point-of-entry episodes that introduce new, previously unseen characters. But, Rick and Morty are nowhere near to ceasing their adventures (at least not until Rick finds that Szechuan Chicken McNugget Sauce).
Back in 2018, before the release of show’s fourth season, Adult Swim renewed the whole series for a whopping 70 new episodes as part of a long-term deal. So, as more seasons come to be aired, there will inevitably be some canonical episodes rooted in previous seasons.
Besides, how would you applaud at the throning of Evil Morty when you don’t even know his back story? And how Beth speculated about being a clone before she discovered the truth. Citadel of Ricks and their intent to kill the outcast C-137 didn’t just spawn randomly. You will understand once you see the series according to one of these orders:
Release Order
The pilot episode of Rick and Morty, which aired back on 2 December 2013, first starred the skeptical scientist Rick, his fidgety grandson Morty, and other members of the immediate family.
A. Seasons
- Season 1 (2013)
- Season 2 (2015)
- Season 3 (2017)
- Season 4 (2019)
- Season 5 (2021) (running)
B. Spin-offs
- The Vindicators (2021) (upcoming)
C. Shorts

- Samurai & Shogun (2020)
- Rick and Morty vs. Genocider (2020)
- Rick and Morty in the Eternal Nightmare Machine (2021)
Who knew that the group of superheroes, once mocked by a drunk Rick, would later have a series named after themselves? Yes, I am talking about The Vindicators, which is due for release this year and will be between 8-10 episodes long.
Apart from the canon series, there are several other animated shorts that feature Rick and Morty, like the claymation horror films by Adult Swim, anime short Rick and Morty vs. Genocider, the bizarre Judge Morty based on a real court case, etc.
You can watch each one of these shorts solely on YouTube.
Chronological Watch Order
Only a few people know that before officially becoming the Rick and the Morty, they were known as the adventurous duo Doc and Mharti. Watch them fly kites, lick testicles to travel through time, and do other uncouth stuff in this Back to the Future parody. This twisted show was a hilarious attempt by Justin Roiland to troll Universal Pictures.
I actually made this as a way to poke fun at the idea of getting cease and desist letters. At the time (October 2006) I had nothing to lose and my original intention was to call this “back to the future: the new official universal studios cartoon featuring the new Doc Brown and Marty McFly” and then I’d just sit back and wait for a letter from their lawyers to arrive. That’s actually why it’s so filthy. I was just looking to “troll” a big studio.

Also, six months before the airing of Season 1, at the San Diego Comic-Con panel 2013, the creators, cast, and crew of Rick and Morty addressed a baffling audience regarding the nature of this show.
- The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti (2006)
- SDCC 2013: Rick and Morty Panel
- Season 1 (2013)
- Mathlete’s Feat (2015 couch gag of The Simpsons)
- Season 2 (2015)
- Season 3 (2017)
- Season 4 (2019)
- Season 5 (2021) (running)
Another funny incident was the couch gag of The Simpsons’ episode titled Mathlete’s Feat in which Rick and Morty rushed into The Simpsons’ residence through a space portal. And in doing so, the duo accidentally killed off the entire family of The Simpsons. Watch how they undo this mistake in 2 mins and 21 seconds.
After you’re done with the order above, you can watch those six unrelated shorts in any order you like. It won’t make much of a difference.

How Much Time Will It Take To Watch
Counting all the canon seasons and other shorts, it will take you around 21 hours to binge-watch the entire Rick and Morty series.
