Earth’s elite team of champions, the Justice League has always overcome multiple unfavorable odds to save the human race from time to time. And during this course of menaces, the League has often undergone several roster changes.
But, the chief founding crew usually consisted of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter.
Many theatrical movies like Justice League of America (1997) and Justice League (2017) gave a glimpse into the feats achieved when these superheroes combined their powers. But only a glimpse. Animated movies have been far superior when it comes to indulgent storytelling.
A fact that must be noted here is that I’ve only covered the Justice League-starring animated DC movies in this watch order. If you wish to know how to watch every animated DC movie ever, allow me to suggest to you the ultimate DC Animated Movie guide.
While there is not a definitive watch order for many of these installments, some of them do share continuity. And a few moments can be truly rewarding if you have watched those in the correct sequence. Let’s begin with the naive Release Order which some of you may choose to follow:
Release Order
Set in the 1950s during the era of Cold War paranoia, the JL: The New Frontier (2008) was adapted from the DC comic book of the same name. Here, the heroes display quite the classic Golden Age look.
Movies
- Justice League: The New Frontier (2008)
- Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (2010)
- Justice League: Doom (2012)
- Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013)
- Justice League: War (2014)
- JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time (2015)
- Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (2015)
- Justice League: Gods and Monsters (2015)
- Justice League vs. the Teen Titans (2016)
- Justice League Dark (2017)
- Justice League vs. the Fatal Five (2019)
- Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020)
- Justice Society: World War II (2021)
Justice Society (2021) marks the latest animated entry in JL movies and is part of the Rebirth timeline. It saw Flash accidentally ending up back in time to World War II where he first met the Justice Society of America.
Though the movies don’t really seem to set up the subsequent film with any sincerity, they are chronological in nature and the New 52 & JLA list is recommended in the following manner:
Complete Watch Order
The New 52 is a completely revamped structure that DC Comics started following in 2011. The DC Animated Movie Universe (DCAMU) was thus formed and the first movie of this timeline was JL: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013). It primarily initiated the concept of the multiverse.
A. New 52
- Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013)
- Justice League: War (2014)
- Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (2015)
- Justice League vs. the Teen Titans (2016)
- Justice League Dark (2017)
- The Death of Superman (2018)
- Reign of the Supermen (2019)
- Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020)
- Justice Society: World War II (2021)
B. JLA
- Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (2010)
- Justice League: Doom (2012)
C. Standalone
- Justice League: The New Frontier (2008)
- JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time (2015)
- Justice League: Gods and Monsters (2015)
- Justice League vs. the Fatal Five (2019)
The Justice League of America (JLA) series of comic books also showed the Justice League in a new light, with newer superheroes in the team. So, the two animated JLA movies need to be seen one after the other.
As for the standalone installments, you can watch them in any order you desire. Justice League vs. the Fatal Five is actually a part of DC Animated Universe (DCAU), so if you’re planning to see DCAU movies, better watch JL vs. the Fatal Five before Batman Beyond.
Where To Watch
How Much Time Will It Take To Watch
Including all the animated movies mentioned in the Complete Watch Order, it will take you around 16 hours and 30 mins to binge-watch the entire Justice League animated timeline.
Pfft! Only that long? I am sure JL fans like you and I could see all this over one weekend easily.
Note: These are approximate values of the runtimes.
