Battlestar Galactica is regarded as one of the best sci-fi series of the last decade. Despite being old and with new sci-fi shows of the Star Wars franchise, it still retains its ardent fan following! The TV Show branches out into webisodes and movies midway, making it a little confusing to follow the timeline.
The Battlestar Galactica timeline shuffles between the main series and spin-off web series and films. You can follow either the release order or the chronological watch order to enjoy this epic space franchise. It includes 4 seasons of the main series, 4 spin-off series, 3 TV movies, and a two-part mini-series.
First, we’ll list out all titles of Battlestar Galactica in their release order and then move to the watch order. So sit back because, after the next 5 minutes, you can embark on your Battlestar Galactica binge adventures.
Release Order
This is a fairly straightforward list where the two-part mini-series acted as a pilot for the main show, which lasted for 4 seasons. Most of the spin-off web series and TV movies came out during the main show’s run-time, with the final two films Caprica and Blood And Chrome, coming out after the show.
- Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries (2003)
- Battlestar Galactica: 4 Seasons (2004 – 2009)
- Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance (2006)
- Battlestar Galactica: Razor Flashbacks | 7 Episode Web Series (2007)
- Battlestar Galactica: Razor (2007)
- Battlestar Galactica: The Face Of Enemy (2009)
- Battlestar Galactica: The Plan (2009)
- Caprica (2010)
- Battlestar Galactica: Blood And Chrome (2012)
It is also interesting to note that seasons 2 and 4 were essentially a two-part series that premiered as 2, 2.5, and 4, 4.5. This wasn’t for any creative reasons but merely that the channel wanted to have summer and winter seasons.
There are two other Battlestar Galactica TV series that came out in 1978 and 1980. However, I’ve not included those in the list since the modern version was a reboot/remake of the 70s show. Furthermore, the modern one is much better than the previous one in terms of the story.
Chronological Watch Order
In the chronological timeline, the narrative branches out to its spin-offs before coming back to the main series of 4 seasons. In a couple of places, you’ll also need to watch a spin-off before catching the next episode to maintain the timeline’s continuity.
So I’ve explained below the exact places where you’ll have to stop mid-season and where to resume.
- Battlestar Galactica: The Mini-Series (2 Parts)
- Battlestar Galactica: Season 1 (13 Episodes)
- Battlestar Galactica: Season 2 (20 Episodes)
- Episode 17: The Captain’s Hand
- Battlestar Galactica: Razor (TV Movie)
- Battlestar Galactica: Razor Flashbacks (Web Series: 7 Parts)
- Episode 18 to 20
- Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance (Web Series: 10 Parts)
- Battlestar Galactica: Season 3 (20 Episodes)
- Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 (21 Episodes)
- Episode 11: Sometimes A Great Notion
- Battlestar Galactica: The Face Of The Enemy (Web Series: 10 Parts)
- Episodes 12 to 15
- Battlestar Galactica: The Plan (TV Movie)
- Episode 16 to 21
- Caprica (18 Episodes)
- Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome (TV Movie)
The last two titles in the series, Caprica and Blood & Chrome, are essentially prequels to this re-imagined series. However, one can watch them at the start or the end since they don’t directly connect to the rest of the Battlestar franchise in a pivotal manner.
Where Can You Watch?
The complete Battlestar Galactica franchise is available on Amazon Prime except for The Resistance web series which can be found on Scifi Stream, from where you’ll be led to iTunes to buy the series. However, no streaming service has the Razor Flashbacks web series.
Where Can You Watch Unrated Extended Versions
From Season 2 to Season 4 various episodes have a few deleted scenes and episodes with unrated extended versions. You can find pretty much all the unrated versions, Amazon Prime.
The deleted scenes of various episodes and podcasts on every episode that gives you insight into the show are all available on the DVD sets.
Run-Time
Every episode across the main series’ 4 seasons is about 45 minutes, and the TV movies range from 90 to 120 minutes. The total run-time for you to complete the entire franchise would be about 96 hours.
Which Is Better? Release Order Or Watch Order
We all know that the Star Wars universe is best experienced when you watch it in chronological order, and the reason for this is simple. There are numerous characters with multiple arcs and storylines. So a back and forth just confuses us more than it should.
With the Battlestar Galactica franchise, it’s the same. You will enjoy the universe the most when you follow the storyline chronologically. One advantage you have is unlike the star wars universe, the Battlestar Galactica universe is relatively smaller and there are fewer titles in it. So it wouldn’t be difficult for you to understand the watch order, and you can binge everything rather easily.
