Square Enix, in its first-ever edition of ‘Square Enix Presents’ announced that the formerly (working) titled Project Athia has now been rechristened to Forspoken. The Japanese video game giant also announced that the RPG will release for PS5 as well as for PC in 2022, thus dropping its previously announced console exclusivity.
The game was first revealed under its working title during Sony’s Future of Gaming event last year. Square Enix and Sony have now revealed more about the game’s story along with a sweet new trailer.
In Forspoken, you play as Frey Holland, an ordinary young woman who must harness her magical abilities to survive Athia – a fantastical land infested with dark and dangerous beasts. On her journey across this “stunningly beautiful, but also cruel and deadly” land, Frey not only plumbs the deep mysteries of a foreign world but also slowly uncovers all that lies within her own psyche.
Ella Balinska (Charlie’s Angels, 2019) stars as Frey Holland while the land of Athia, and its inhabitants by extension, seems to be a perfect amalgamation of the worlds from Horizon Zero Dawn and Bloodborne.
As per the game’s website, Square Enix along with developer Luminous Productions plan to deliver
“a narrative-driven adventure with gameplay experiences that combine the latest technology with unbridled creativity.”

As proven by the gameplay in the trailer, Forspoken seems just the title to take for a spin on a high-tech PS5 with its super-fast SSD and ray tracing. With PCs being equipped with similar tech, it won’t be altogether surprising if the game requires an SSD to run.
Forspoken is set to drop for PS5 and PC in 2022 with Sony having the rights for console exclusivity for two years post-release.
