Producers Michele Fazekas and Eric Kripke have elaborated on how the unexpected Gen V season 1 finale directly leads into The Boys season 4.
The conclusion to the spin-off show is intensely violent and includes cameo appearances of two stars from the flagship series, Antony Starr’s Homelander and Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher.
After the horrible campus massacre engineered by Cate, Homelander accuses Marie of attacking her own kind in a shocking turn of events. Meanwhile, the mid-credits show Butcher exploring the abandoned Godolkin University research facility, dubbed ‘The Woods.’
In an interview with Variety, the producers discussed how Gen V’s season 1 directly segues into season 4 of The Boys and even clarified how the timelines add up.
Kripke revealed that he wanted Butcher to have already a hint of the Supe killing virus in The Boys season 4, which is the reason for the character’s cameo.

For Butcher, by the time they were making the finale, we were pretty deep into breaking Season 4. We knew that we wanted that virus to be a pretty big part of Season 4, and we knew that we wanted Butcher to be aware of it. It seems crazy that he wouldn’t be aware of it. It became kind of tricky, because how do we show that he knows about it without it just being dialogue? This idea came up that it probably shouldn’t even happen in “The Boys,” it should happen in “Gen V.” The value of having the [two shows’ writers] rooms be in coordination is, our room took it to Michele and her room and said, ‘Can we put Butcher in the end, so we can show that he’s really hot on the tail of the virus?’ It was really cool, because it does a nice little preamble to what’s coming next. And Karl and Ant both were willing to come in on their days off to go work on the other show. But the Homelander part was Michele’s team.

It’s pretty close to Election Day now.

It started with the fall semester, and it was reasonably halfway through, you’re in October-ish when this show kicks off and the election is in November.

Gen V’s fatal Supe killing virus has the potential to radically change the balance of power in the shared universe of both shows. Originally created as an intricate revenge plan by Godolkin University’s Dean Shetty, the virus comes into possession of Victoria Neuman after Gen V season 1.
However, it’ll surely be an object of interest for all the major players in the game, especially Butcher and his compatriots.
The unique thing about the virus is its potential to harm even those who were initially thought to be invulnerable, like Homelander. Therefore, it is a deadly nuke to whoever possesses it at the end of the ordeal and will essentially decide the balance of power.
Moreover, if the virus ever spreads, it’ll be catastrophic for the city of Supes and the Vought Corporation.
Moreover, the virus might also be fatal to characters previously exposed to Temp V, in which case both Hughie Campbell and Butcher will be susceptible to the effects.
We still don’t know what Kripke and his team have planned for The Boys season 4, but the implications of the ordeal could be world-shattering for the shared universe!
About The Boys
The Boys is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Prime Video. Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which was originally published by DC Comics under their Wildstorm imprint before moving to Dynamite Entertainment, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities.
The show is a satirical take on the superhero genre and showcases a world where superheroes are corporatized and controlled by companies. What happens when these superheroes step out of line and rub some boys the wrong way, is the story.
