When the original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released back in 2003, it ended up making most of our childhoods. The struggle of those innocent PlayStation 2 days when we used to put the disk in and pray to every god there was for the game to boot up was real, and still remains unmatched.
Therefore, when Ubisoft announced a remake of its most popular PS2 game back in 2020 so current-gen gamers could get a taste of it, enthusiasts were all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
But as is the norm with gaming and development these days, the remake has been held prey to quite a lot of delays since it was revealed.
Initially, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was set to roll out in 2021, but then delays shifted its release window to this year. But now, according to the latest announcement from Ubisoft, the game is no longer targeting a 2023 release anymore.
This reveal came shortly after buyers had their pre-orders getting canceled, and retail stores like GameStop started delisting pre-orders for the remake, leading fans to think that the game had been axed.
Mitigating these fears, a Ubisoft rep said:
We’re proud of the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Montreal will benefit from their learnings as the new team will continue the work to deliver a great remake. As a consequence, we are no longer targeting an FY23 release anymore and the game has been delisted. If players wish to cancel their pre-order, they are invited to contact their retailer. They will be updated on the project as the development is moving along.

Given that the development team switch made Ubisoft push the game out of FY23, we can only imagine its current state of development. Nonetheless, it’s good to see that the company isn’t scrapping its plans to deliver a revamped Prince of Persia even when the going got tough.
