The pilot for the Powerpuff Girls live-action reboot series is getting reworked, and the show will not be airing this fall. Titled Powerpuff, the series will follow the grown-up versions of the iconic superhero trio who have become disillusioned with their job of saving the world and resent having missed a normal childhood.
Although the show was supposed to be released sometime after the summer months, it now seems that won’t be the case. According to Deadline, the Powerpuff pilot episode will be reworked and redeveloped and thus will not be aired during The CW’s Fall 2021 lineup.
There has been no official word regarding the reason behind this recent development. While the news of the reworking might suggest that the studio wasn’t satisfied with the pilot, it doesn’t necessarily spell bad news for the show itself.
Many successful shows, including Seinfeld, Star Trek, and The Big Bang Theory, have had multiple pilots filmed, and all of them have been well received by audiences. Even HBO’s longtime hit Game of Thrones had its pilot reworked, which saw Tamzin Merchant replaced by Emilia Clarke to play Daenerys Targaryen.
Furthermore, holding off Powerpuff‘s release till after autumn may be advantageous for the reboot. Without being smothered by the network’s other shows, Powerpuff will be allowed to have its shining moment under the full limelight without being lost in a sea of other projects.
Series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Office all began as midseason replacement shows. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Riverdale too premiered in January and have had great success on The CW.
Powerpuff was first announced in 2020, being developed by The CW with Warner Bros. set to produce it. Academy Award winner Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier serve as writers and presumably as executive producers, as well. The pilot began filming on April 7, 2021, with fans getting their first look at the characters from set photos before The CW released the official looks.
Even though fans of the original children’s cartoon have shown some hesitation about the reboot, a strong pilot could just win them over and make Powerpuff the next forerunning series for The CW.
