The CW has given a pilot order for The Powerpuff Girls live-action reboot series, which will portray the three heroes in their twenties, coming out of retirement.
Created by Craig McCracken, the original animated series pushed through six successful seasons from 1998 to 2005 on Cartoon Network. The series observed Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles, three pint-sized superheroes formulated by their scientist father, who fight crime and protect their fictitious city of Townsville.
The girls came into being when Professor Utonium blended “sugar, spice, and everything nice with the mysterious Chemical X,” as the show’s opening reminded you every episode.
The Powerpuff Girls was a pop culture sensation, appealing to both children and adults, and giving 90’s kids some of the first instances of female empowerment.
A fresh live-action reboot was first confirmed back in August 2020. The reboot has been picked up by The CW. The network has given a pilot order for the series, which observes the three superheroes who are now “disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting.”
The three girls will be challenged to come out of retirement together to protect the world. The show is created by writers and executive producers Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars) and Diablo Cody (Juno), with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden executive producing via Berlanti Productions. Warner Bros. Television will also produce.
The first reboot of this beloved show came out in 2016, starring the same plot as the original with a new voice crew and modifications in animation style. The reboot was released on Cartoon Network, but did not receive as much love from the critics as the original, and faced numerous controversies, including the addition of a fourth, Black Powerpuff Girl (who many felt was an offensive stereotype).
The Powerpuff Girls is one of three pilots sanctioned by The CW, with all of them developed by women and centered around young women. The others include Naomi by Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship, which is a series adaption of the DC comic of the same name, and a yet-to-be-titled religious dramedy about two millennial nuns.
The CW is not new to revising childhood content into young adult shows, following its spectacular take on The Archies with Riverdale (which was recently revived for a sixth season).
While Riverdale is popular for its often cringey dialogue and bizarre storylines, there is no hiding the fact that it has a strong fan base, and it’s reasonable that The Powerpuff Girls could excite long-time fans and a new generation of viewers.
