2. Episode 2 Speculation
Episode 1 of Pon no Michi successfully kept up a happy vibe throughout the entire episode. It was the founding day of Nashiko’s new secret lair and a new side of board games open to her as she learns about mahjong. She accidentally frees a mahjong spirit while cleaning the parlor, and now she’s stuck with it.
From the looks of it, we can say that the show is going to revolve around the game of mahjong. At the end of episode one, we were introduced to another character who seemed very passionate about mahjong. This character is Riche Hayashi. What kind of fun memories will Nashiko and her friends make by playing mahjong, and what exactly is this mahjong spirit? We can expect to get answers to this question in the near future.
3. Recap of Episode 1
Nashiko Jippensha, our protagonist, gets kicked out of the house by her mom. Why? Because she was being too loud. It’s a hilarious way to start an episode but that’s what makes a first good impression about this anime. After getting thrown outside, she leaves to go somewhere else, and her friend Kawahigashi Pai follows after her.
The two of them go to a park, where Nashiko suddenly gets a call from her dad. She tells him about her getting kicked out, and hearing this, her father says that there was a game parlor nearby that they could use since it had been shut down. Nashiko jumps in happiness, knowing this would be their own secret base, but little does she know what awaits her at the parlor.
Once Nahsiko and Pai reach there and open the gate, they face a wall of cardboard boxes. Pai finds a note from Nashiko’s father, which says that he had anticipated something like this would happen, and if Nashiko clears out the room, it’s all hers. She just needs to get the boxes outside, and he’ll get someone to pick them up.
While Nashiko starts taking the boxes out, Pai goes to search for their friend Izumi for help. After a while of cleaning, Nashiko finds a weird electronic table in the middle of the room and some mahjong tiles in a box. She sees a shiny golden tile and tosses it on the table. To her surprise, the tile transforms into a tiny sparrow, a talking one.
It tells her that it is not a sparrow but a mahjong spirit. After figuring out that Nashiko has no clue about what Mahjong is, the spirit was clearly disappointed, but before anything noticeable happens, Pai returns with Izumi. Izumi is very familiar with Mahjong, and Pai knows the basics, too, so the trio decide to play it.
Izumi names the bird/mahjong spirit, “Chombo”. Mahjong games usually require four players, and Chombo joins as the fourth player since there are only three of them. Here one thing we must remember is that only Nashiko can hear Chombo.
The three of them then quickly finish cleaning, and then Izumi and Pai leave. Nashiko stays behind waiting for her dad’s call about the boxes but is approached by a rather quirky unknown lady instead. She thought the parlor was reopening.
When Nashiko tells her that is not the case, she gets a bit upset but gets excited again after she realizes Nashiko is the owner’s daughter. She tells her that her name is Hayashi Riche. The fact that Nashiko and her friends were playing mahjong there slipped out of her mouth, and Riche almost forcefully enrolls herself as the fourth member.
