Episode 1 was released on January 5, 2022, and the engaging story has led the viewers to question how this series came into existence.

A 2018 interview of Miko Yasu, the creator of Police in Pod, has resurfaced, and it has all the essential tidbits that you would love to know.

In case you didn’t know, Miko Yasu served as a police officer for around ten years before retiring. When asked why she joined the police force, she replied that she was taught to be empathetic towards crime victims from an early age.

After serving for almost a decade, she took childcare leave, but the officer who filled her position died of overwork. There are lots of people who are overworked in this field.

After the officer’s death, Yasu kept thinking that it was her fault. She thought it was because she chose her child over the person’s life. A shocking statement revealed that the better a person is, the more they get overworked.

When she returned from leave, she worked to recruit more people to lessen the load on the pre-existing officers. What surprised her was the lack of interest on the part of high schoolers.

Her motive as a mangaka wasn’t “I want you to read my work” rather, it was “I want you to know about the police.”

Many manga and anime have focused on the police department, but Miko Yasu’s series is a cut above the rest due to her inclusion of reality in the series.

For example, in the first episode, we see Kawai learning the ins and outs of their profession from a seasoned burglar. Yasu confesses that this scene was taken from her own life.

The fact that miscreants target neighborhoods that do not care about maintaining laws is also a well-known tidbit among the police.

The author also gives us a much-needed women’s point of view on the profession.

The police aren’t allowed to take off any pieces of equipment during work hours, this rule is highly disagreeable for women since they can’t use the washroom.

Unlike men, women can’t just unzip a fly and be done with it. Yasu stated that she had to drink less water when on duty, and her work took priority over her bladder.

I hope that these depictions in the manga catch not only the attention of young readers but also the police department itself.

Surprisingly, the author grew up reading no manga at all. She was an avid reader, but manga never entered her household’s premises.

This is also why he had much difficulty when she chose to make a manga herself. She left her work to practice art before editors finally green-lit her story.

Miko Yasu’s dedication towards her previous line of work is thoroughly reflected in her manga. Since the series has just received an anime adaptation, I hope her message reaches a larger audience to fulfill her goal.
