Being a big fan of 8-bit RPG’s I was super excited to try out developer TRAGsoft’s Coromon for the first time. Diving straight into the game, it gave me the role of a young trainer ready to take on the world of Velua to become the best battle researcher under Lux Solis.
This is where my brain went into overdrive, and the concept of Coromon seemed vaguely familiar. Don’t get me wrong; I have had my fair share of 8-bit games in the past, like To The Moon, Stardew Valley, and Finding Paradise. So, the similar 8-bit art style was not a red flag. But what piqued my curiosity was the game Coromon’s similarity to a famous monster taming RPG we all love and adore.
That’s right; I am talking about the one and only Pokemon. Although I promised myself not to, I couldn’t help but compare Coromon’s story to Pokemon’s. No, No! Don’t worry; I will review the game as a whole and not yet another duplication. So, let’s get on with my journey of the wondrous world of monster taming RPG through Coromon.
1. Pokemon Nostalgia
Before I could venture out into the world of Velua, I, a young battle researcher of Lux Solis, got my very first Coromon. I chose the traits of my Coromon, got to give it a nickname, and immediately realized it would be the Pikachu to my Ash Ketchum.
Like Pokemon, I ventured to unknown areas, forests, and underground caves to battle wild Coromons or other Lux Solis trainers. The Coromons were stored in little gadgets called spinners and could be nursed back to their full HP in the Trainer’s Hub.
2. Soothing Music and A Vast World to Explore
When it comes to 8 bit RPGs, music is essential. It sets the tone of the game. So, is Coromon’s soundtrack a bop or a flop? I’d say a complete bop, in my opinion. Coromon has a fair share of beautiful soundtracks that trigger randomly during your gameplay.
The world of Velua is also massive and fully explorable. As I explored each area, I found new Coromons, fought a few wild ones, and even captured some to add to my squad.
3. Unique Monsters and Combats Skills
Unlike other monster tamers, Coromon has its unique way of leveling up the Coromons you own. You can increase the stats of your Coromons individually and have a well-balanced team.
Suppose you increase only the special attacks of one and focus on the defenses of another. This alone could make your team unstoppable and take you one step closer to being the best trainer. Your Coromon can also unlock special combat skills after leveling up.
With all these features making the game enjoyable, you must be wondering what the catch is? How come I love everything about the game? Well, to be completely honest with you, I do have some complaints regarding it.
4. Repetitive Battles Eat Up Game Hours
Although challenging Lux Solis trainers or battling wild Coromon is the best way to level up your Coromons, running away from a battle was difficult. Running away from wild Coromon battles had a low chance, and the trainer battles were impossible to run away from.
This made my gaming experience a bit too repetitive. I was stuck in an endless loop of trying to configure my way out of the grassy plains, healing my fainted Coromons, and trying not to have wild Coromon encounters.
5. Is Coromon Worth Buying?
Is the concept original? No. But, it’s clear that the devs are big fans of Pokemon and want to make their world inspired by that. So, if you’re into indie games or an 8-bit gaming connoisseur, you will see yourself playing Coromon for a few solid hours.
If you’re not, you might want to steer clear off of this title as the repetitive travels and battles could get dull quickly. As for me, I’d give this one an 8/10! Let’s wait for the games’ official release on Q1 of 2022 and see if gamers love it or not.
6. About Coromon
Coromon is a new monster-taming 8-bit RPG by the developers TRAGsoft. Aiming for a Q1 2022 release, the game lets players take on the role of a young trainer in the land of Velua.
The players are then appointed by a scientific research team called Lux Solis to become battle research and given the task of capturing wild Coromons.
Players must then prove to be the best trainer and level up their Coromons to fight much more deadly opponents, all while travelling to beautiful locations.
Coromon will be available on PC via Steam and even on Android and iOS devices.
