Netflix announced the premiere of the long-anticipated PLUTO anime adaptation with the release of a sneak peek video that previews the upcoming Studio M2 series. The adaptation of Naoki Urasawa’s manga was announced in 2017 and will release this year.
The initial cast for the series has been announced as well. The anime stars Shinshu Fuji in the role of Gesicht, Yoko Hikasa as Atom and Minori Suzuki in the role of Uran.
GENCO is producing the series in collaboration with Tezuka Productions, with animation production by M2.
It was announced that further details regarding the anime’s release date will be revealed on March 25 at this year’s Anime Japan.
The plot of the PLUTO manga takes place in a distant future where sentient humanoid robots pass for human and someone is out to destroy the seven great robots of the world.
In order to protect these robots, Europol’s top detective Gesicht is brought on board to to investigate these mysterious robot serial murders.
However, matters are slightly complicated as Gesicht himself is one of the seven targets and must protect himself while attempting to get to the bottom of the case.
Macoto Tezka, the son of Osamu Tezuka, will act as supervisor for the series and shared a few words about the adaptation at a press release, alongside manga illustrator and writer Naoki Urasawa and manga co-author Takashi Nagasaki.
The PLUTO manga ran Shogakun’s Big Comic Original magazine from 2003 to 2009 and has been made into right compiled volume books. It has received much critical acclaim over the years and has been translated and published in over 20 countries.

Pluto is a manga written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa. It was serealized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Original magazine from 2003 to 2009. The manga is getting an anime in 2023.
The manga follows a robot detective named Gesicht who is investigating a string of robot murders. Matters are further complicated when Gesicht realizes that he may be a target of the murderer as well.
