From August 31st 2021, PlayStation users will no longer be able to access TV shows and movies through the PS Store.
Buying and renting movies and TV shows have been one of the lesser spoken about, but still widely used, features of the PS4 and the PS5. However, as revealed by the PlayStation blog, the PS Store will stop offering movies and TV shows. This particular service will be stopped in August.
We have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021.
PlayStation
PlayStation has cited the success of subscription based platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video as the reason behind this move. And this make sense as most shows and movies can be found on one OTT service or the other. Given that the PS4 and PS5 can also double as a media streaming devices, it’s quite likely that people would be consuming their content through these methods.
The blog does confirm that any movie or show you have purchased from the PS Store thus far will remain in your library and can be viewed at any time. So if there’s anything you want to keep on your console and not have to search for it through various subscription services, then now is the time to buy and download it.
PlayStation has clearly come to this decision after paying close attention to what its consoles are being used for. The PS5 doesn’t have a web browser and PlayStation confirmed that they probably wouldn’t ever add one as they see no need for it. Hopefully, they’ll also add things to their consoles from the lessons they learn through these kind of observations.
