With 2021 ending in a little over a week, there are just two months left for the release of PlayStation’s racing exclusive, Gran Turismo 7. The claim is this will be the best racing simulation experience ever, and the game will be pushing the console to its limits with real-time ray tracing, 3D spacial audio, 4K resolution, 60 fps, and HDR support.
The company is also pushing immersion to the next level with some hardware built specifically for the racing game.
Playing a racing sim with the controller is the standard, but for the full experience, you’ll want to try out one of the driving wheel and pedal controllers available. As we get closer to the release of Gran Turismo 7, PlayStation has now revealed the newest offering from Fanatec, the Gran Turismo DD Pro wheel, and pedals, which will also be released in March.
The official PlayStation Twitter account has released some new images of the wheel. It is an officially licensed Gran Turismo driving wheel and has been designed in collaboration with Polyphony Digital.
The wheel will come with force feedback with up to 5 Nm peak torque, standard tuning for beginners, and advanced tuning menus for enthusiasts, four directional sticks, and all of the expected PlayStation button inputs.
The wheel also comes with a two-pedal (throttle and brake) set crafted out of metal. The pedals have been designed for both precision and durability using 12-bit sensors and vertical and horizontal adjustments based on player preferences.
The brake will also offer progressive braking feel with resistance. It’s clear this wheel has been made keeping racing game enthusiasts in mind, which will help players get a better feel for the 400+ cars available in the game.
The Gran Turismo DD Pro is being marketed as an accessory for the game, but it is not limited to just that purpose. It will be compatible with “all major racing games” via Fanatec’s SDK, and will support the PS5, PS4 and PC. It is possible the wheel could work with other platforms as well, but it hasn’t been officially stated by Fanatec.
The showcase was also to draw attention to the now open pre-orders of the Gran Turismo DD Pro wheel. The base version of the racing wheel and pedals will cost $700 and will ship in March 2022.
There are also alternative options, such as offering greater torque from 5 Nm to 8 Nm for $850, or a high-performance brake pedal assembly for $970. There is an $850 base bundle that promises delivery by Christmas.
So, if you’re looking to get the most immersive experience from Gran Turismo 7, the Gran Turismo DD Pro wheel and pedal combo appears to be the only device capable of making you one with your virtual machine. It’s a steep price to pay, especially for such niche hardware, but enthusiasts will appreciate the level of work and detail gone into its crafting.
