The moment Sony promised to provide a sneak peek at several major games in development for PlayStation VR2 at the recent State of Play, fans’ excitement went over the roof. After all, who wouldn’t want to see the strides that the Japanese giants are making to conquer the VR frontier with the platform?
Thankfully, the event lived up to everyone’s expectations! When gems like RE: Village, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution, and Horizon: Call of the Mountain were showcased, the capabilities of the VR left spectators speechless and wanting more.
As much as the games gave us an insight into what the virtual reality experience could be like, Sony remained tight-lipped about their and PS VR2’s release window.
However, through a PlayStation Blog post for The Walking Dead, Developer Skydance Interactive has mistakenly given away the release date of PS VR2. The update claims that while the title will launch for PS VR and Meta Quest 2 later this year, it will roll out for the upcoming PS VR2 in 2023.
This means that enthusiasts will have to wait for one more year to ‘enjoy higher quality visuals, more precise hand tracking and larger, more detailed levels’ that Sony’s next step in VR has to offer.
All those optimistic fans hoping for the platform to roll out this year, given how Sony had a handful of gameplay reveals to showcase, must be gutted now.
But nonetheless, it’s good to have a release window to look forward to and with Sony taking more time to refine their technology, hopefully, it’ll lead to the creation of an even better device.
As for any specifics that could narrow down PS VR2’s release window, we can look into RE 4 remake to paint a clearer picture.
Out of all the games that Sony unveiled for the device, only Resident Evil 4 remake got a release date. But it must be kept in mind that the title is slated to hit the shelves without packing its VR capabilities on March 24, 2023. This makes us believe that PS VR2 is likely to release as early as April 2023 if no delays are encountered.
