Summary:
- Player reports receiving an in-game advertisement for a 20% discount on Assassin’s Creed Mirage while playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
- The advertisement was only spotted on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey.
- Players condemn Ubisoft’s move to include obstructive advertisements in-game, some suggesting that they might uninstall the game because of this.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage has left ripples in the gaming market with massive success on a relatively small budget. This game had it all – return to true Assassin roots, revamped parkour, beautiful visuals, and better enemy AI.
Recently, u/triddell24 posted in the r/xboxone subreddit that they got an in-game advertisement in the form of a pop-up for a 20% discount on Assassin’s Creed Mirage on the eve of Ubisoft’s Black Friday deals when they tried to open the map in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
U/CryostaticLT corroborated the same issue on the PlayStation 5 version of Odyssey. This is not a new incident for fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise and players who have played titles developed by Ubisoft.
Historically, Ubisoft has pushed out in-game promos via platform-dependent updates. However, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has not received a single update in over two years, so this advertisement is over the internet connection.
This means switching off the internet connection or playing Odyssey offline will solve the issue. While it’s not new for the epic titles of Odyssey, Origin, and Valhalla to feature in-game ads, this is the first time an advertisement has been spotted for AC: Mirage.
One fascinating link was spotted in the PC version of AC: Valhalla. The Ubisoft store link, however, did not lead to Mirage but to Valhalla’s own in-game armor DLC.
Fans are pretty furious, some even suggesting they will uninstall the game. Most fans feel the same way – showing adverts in tiles on the main menu is far better than obstructing the gameplay with an advertisement.
It will be interesting to see if this advert leads to more sales of Mirage or an even more significant decrease in count than the 68% decrease that Mirage recorded in the first month. Only time will tell if Ubisoft got too greedy or if this was a great marketing move.
