It’s no surprise that the system requirements of God of War require a beefy rig to run the game at its full capacity. Therefore, it’s only natural that the title is playable on advanced operating systems like Windows 10 & Windows 11, leaving users with decade-old OS in the dark.
All those PC users who remained loyal to Windows 7 and 8 were undoubtedly upset upon hearing this news. With God of War on its way to join Steam’s bestseller list just days after launching and receiving glowing reviews from fans and critics alike, many wanted the title to run on even more systems so even they could jump on the bandwagon.
Luckily for such users, the modding community came to the rescue by finding a way to run God of War on older versions of Windows.
Created by modders ‘okt04175’ and ‘alan2350,’ an unofficial God of War patch makes the game compatible on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 by altering its OS version detection behavior. Interested gamers can jump to Nexusmods to download it.
Note: Once you install this mod, you won’t be able to play God of War on Windows 10/11 anymore.
To get the mod working, you will have to apply the patch to the game’s .exe file, download and decompress DXVK d3d11.dll and dxgi.dll and place them next to GoW.exe before starting the game.
Besides this mod, you’ll also require doitsujin’s dxvk, HansKristian-Work’s vkd3d-proton, Sporif’s DXVK-Async Patch, and marco-calautti’s DeltaPatcher to raise the game’s compatibility. You’ll find the links to these programs listed on the mod’s page.
While the entire process of making God of War work on previous iterations of Windows might look daunting at first, don’t let it overwhelm you. Just carefully follow the instructions, and you’ll be able to play the game without upgrading your system.
