Rick Riordan’s story about Percy Jackson and his life filled with deadly prophecies involving gods and monsters first hit bookstores in June 2005. The first book was followed by four more in the same series, and then three more series revolving around Roman, Egyptian, and Norse mythologies soon made up the Percy Jackson Universe.
The film adaptation starring Logan Lerman as Percy didn’t work, but now Disney+ is bringing a new series, each season depicting one book from the Percy Jackson book series, and the PJO fandom has high hopes for it. The excitement for the show doubled when PJO’s author announced that a new book will come out in September 2023, featuring the OG trio, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the writer explained how it was the Disney+ show that inspired him to revisit Percy’s story and add to it after more than a decade. You can read his full quote below:
The idea for Chalice of the Gods actually started out when we were looking at the adaptation process again. I had an idea to sort of pitch something that might be of interest to Disney overall as a way of saying, ‘Well, what we could do is if you guys are open to doing a new TV show, maybe I could revisit Percy and do a new Percy book for the first time in umpteen number of years.’
Turns out I didn’t need that as a pitch, but as we were going through the TV show process, I started, as you say, reconnecting with the characters and getting to know them all over again. And we started discussing what publishing could do to support the TV show. I thought back to the ideas that I had pitched for new Percy books, which had been stewing on the back burner there for a while, and it just felt like the right time.
It felt like the right thing to do to celebrate Percy Jackson coming home to a new adaptation. And the story was just fun. I like the idea that Percy has a day-in-the-life adventure, and it’s not the world that is at stake.
Rick Riordan
As I mentioned earlier, the new TV series will dedicate one season for each book, and Riordan, who has been present every step of the way since day one, promises fans won’t be disappointed with the show. The sixth book, Chalice of the Gods, will come out later this year, giving Disney ample time to incorporate it into the story.
Chalice of the Gods will be set after Heroes of Olympus but before Trials of Apollo, meaning Walker Scobell, Leah Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri can resume straight after the fifth season for the sixth instalment.
But I’m getting ahead of myself since Disney hasn’t greenlit the show for a second season, though Riordan is quite sure of it. The new book will surely help with the TV series’ popularity, so here’s hoping both do well with the audience.
